The Conglomeration (the build continues slowly)

I'd say Heims. For one reason only.

Replaceability. Vast majority of wheelers use Heims. Replacements are easier to find

Really depends on what you are going to do with it. I like the ability to grease the Johnny Joints. The heims are more readily available but I think take more care, tend to seize when you don't service them.

armored the sides up and built a bulk head for the rear; also looks like I am going with RuffStuff heims from a buddy that is parting out his crawler. the price is right :pimp1:

decided to move the motor back about 6" to better balance the buggy and also so we can fit the radiator under the hood and not have it hanging off the front like before. also going to cut the frame right before the shock mount and tube it out. amazing how a simple cage redo can turn into a major buggy rework.

not much of an update but some pictures. got the engine moved back and had to cut out part of the floor pan to do so. we plan on putting the floor pan back in it. now I need to make a parts run and go pick up my heims that I bought.

got the radiator in and then things have slowed way down. my buddy who has it at his shop and was doing the bulk of the work bought some land, and now is having a shop and house built. so he has been busy with the shop and house. once he gets going again we will move the project to his shop at his house.

going to do away with the one link in the rear and four link it. also going to four link the front; so heims or johnny joints? and why?

thanks

Johnny Joints, they are rebuildable and greaseable.

But either way would work.

I had a deal lined out on some Heims from a buddy who was parting out his buggy. I was going to buy all 8 links for $200. so I sent him the money. then he text me that the Heims were all rusted, pitted and froze up. :doah:

So I ordered new Johnny Joints from Rockwell Offroad (in the link above.) :pimp1:

dang, been over a year since any updates.
my buddy got the house and shop built. really not any progress on the buggy.

he is trying to convince me to scrap the Toyota axles and go with a D44/14SF combo I have instead. just curious if anyone had any thoughts on that? for the sake of argument let's say both sets are geared at 4.10

Toyota axles are stronger than d44 in many ways except I think the steering arm.
As for the rear I think the 14sf has an edge.
Being on 39.5" tires it could be better to go d44/14sf and upgrade the shafts.
I personally would spring for rcp shafts, but everyone here seems to think it's too much.
Up to 37" I would stay with Toyota axles.

for tires I am thinking of trying the Patagonia Black Labels in a 40". they would also be 8 lug so it would match my big buggy on tons.
it will be full hydro steering whichever axles.

I just have to say that the A-pillars and front part of the old cage was ..... interesting lol

What year axles Toyota?
Birfields?

the front axle came out of one of my F-Toys that I sold. it has longfields, trusses and diff armor. the rear axle is out of a wider later model with a disc brake kit.
