Well, I finally got around to shimming my starter and installing a heat shield today. Background: 402BBC with Thorley tri-y headers. I'm running a 168tooth flywheel and offset mount starter.
The starter would spin but stay engaged. I ran through .020-.040-.060-.1-.12. The latter did the trick but I'm running all three shims. No grinding and the starter dis-engages cleanly now.
. Given how hot the headers get running at low speeds off road I think the heat shield is a good $15 investment as well

when i was younger i always had good luck without having to use a one but now it seems i can't get anything without them needing it
