The Great Smaug

This picture from 78SWB shows what I'm supposed to have. The mount sections are straighter, with no ridge.

Hey bud if you decide to get rid of that brush guard I might want it, I have been thinking about putting a front end off of a seventies pick up on one of my blazers.

I still cannot get over how many wires, modules, and vacuum lines GM used on the cruise control system. Compared even to the GMT-400 trucks (a mere 4 years later), this system is horribly over-complicated. :doah:

I need to run through my wiring and clean up all the unneeded stuff, including all of the modules that no longer do anything.

I discarded some EGR wiring tonight. Also ran the engine up to temp and held it there for 1/2 hour or so. It's nice to hear it running again, and to have the column installed. If I had finished my wheel/tire project I would have driven it around the yard tonight. But I hafta wait for a warm enough day to blast & paint the rims. I also freed up the throttle linkage so it doesn't stick in the WOT position.

I'm still afraid that I cracked the heads when I overheated it 2 years ago. So each time I run it I check the oil for water contamination. I have a couple of engine hours logged, but I'm not sure how long it would take for me to see water on the dipstick.

ODAT.

Sounds like a decent night. Any time to get to fire it up after any short of hiatus, it's a good night.

Yessir. I have my primer and paint, I'm just eagerly watching the weather forecast. Still scraping frost in the mornings, so I hafta wait.

It's kinda like waiting for a baby...

If the heads are cracked you woulda seen it already.. glad it's up and running again!

Really? I figured a crack would manifest itself slowly.

I haven't checked the radiator yet to see if oil is leaking the other way. Come to think of it, I don't remember testing the coolant for freeze resistance last fall either. Not that it would have changed. Sitting is terrible for a truck.

Maintenance-wise, the tranny is still shifting oddly, in pretty much the same pattern as before. 1-2 is perfect, 2-3 flares into neutral before settling down into 3rd, 3-4 is perfect. In longer drives 4th was vanishing altogether, but I only put 8 miles on the truck tonight. I did manually run it back and forth between 3rd and 4th, and I did not have any issues tonight. The T/C never locks up in any gear. I did note that my fluid level is halfway between "low" and "Add 1 Pint," So I'll check that before I give up all hope for this 700R4.

The truck continues to leak nearly every kind of fluid. P/S is dry, the T-case is dripping out of the front yoke seal, the rear diff needs to be resealed, the rear main appears to be weeping, and the radiator is quite low. The front axle is the only fluid reservoir that didn't leak when I got the truck, IIRC. So I have a pile of little things to deal with. I need to get some confidence in the head gasket and figure out the transmission woes. The driver's window went down but not back up. And I smell mouse nest when the vents blow.

Hooray Ethan! Do work and be happy.

Plus, I want you to know that triple posts haven't gone unnoticed.

EDIT: Sorry, quadruple posts...
