The Green Grendel

I don't know, but that's Loonie :haha:

:rotfl: :haha:

Are you offering 5000 loonies?
Well no... I got to many trucks as it is. But I would like a blazer with a diesel, standard and 3/4 ton axles.
I do have my eye on a 82 that is sitting in my home town. It’s just a stock rusty gas auto though.

@AgDieseler, today I went out and cranked it up at 40*. It started, but was belching lots of smoke and clearly wasn't hitting on a couple cylinders. Then I look down and find that the fuel pump was off. :doah: :doah:

I flipped the switch and it started doing its air-locked surging dance. This went on for 2 or 3 minutes, after which it ran exactly like it should.

The moral of the story is that you can cold-start a 6.2 with no lift pump, and it will run. But it was not delivering a proper amount of fuel and it did wind up with air bubbles. Presumably the air bubbles are always there and just getting pushed out the top of the pump.

Yay for more science! :doah:

This thing got at least 6" taller today. :haha:

I decided to drive the TinyCar this morning (because it was 9 degrees and I didn't feel like waiting for the plugs or messing with the block heater). Turned out to be the worst choice out of the bunch, as it's the one that doesn't have snow tires. I sure could have used both the clearance and the 4WD today.

We had some really neat drifts. Some cars got buried and some got no snow. Drifts are cool like that.

Who wants to play dead truck bingo? I turned the key this morning and was rewarded with nothing more than a relay clunk. So I didn't drive it to work. Sigh. I love this truck, it makes me smile each time I drive it. But it keeps pulling time away from more important things. :doah:

So...loose wire? Mouse-chewed wire? Dead starter? Ice buildup? Submit your guesses and I'll update when I have it all figured out.

I'm going to go with:

  • Hole in your wiring insulation and all the magic smoke got out.

I guess I forgot to give my own guess.

Since it spontaneously broke after 3 days of sitting in my driveway, and it's been very cold and blizzardy this week, and it doesn't sound like the solenoid is flipping...

I'm going to guess the relay iced up and it magically heals itself before I get home.

Ok, I'm really just a flaming optimist this time. :haha: :rotfl:

I'm going with dead relay as well. Or the expensive route of dying battery.

I'm going with dead relay as well. Or the expensive route of dying battery.

Voltage stays put at 11.2V whether "cranking" or not, so it's not a failing battery. And even if it was, I'd expect it to try cranking. Plus, 23V on the starter line is still nothing to sneeze at. If I had a battery problem I should be able to bypass the second battery and still start the truck (slowly) on 12V. The 24V starter is a luxury, but there are more 12V trucks than military ones out there.

But hey, replacing a $100 battery would be cheaper than replacing the starter. Autozone prices start at $150 for civilian starters, and 24V stuff isn't widely stocked.

I have a repeated history of finding dead (arced) spots in my 6.2 starter solenoids, so it will clunk but not engage the switch. I don't think that's the case here because that problem starts gradually. But a little ice in there might do something similar? :dunno:

The options are few, I will track this issue down like I've tracked down all the others.
