Seeing how it's put together, I suppose the other failure modes that could cause that are worse than broken crank - in terms of reviving it someday.

My thought exactly. If it was caused by a block failure, the crank would still break anyways.

You're not pulling the engine from the Suburban, right? The Blazer will sit while you rush the other things the Suburban needs?

That's correct. It's running and just needs peripherals. Much more manageable given the time frame.
 
It's weird, as I was pulling into the harbor on Friday I remembered you said you'd be on CB channel 16. So I keyed the mic and said "Ethan, this is God. You must LS swap all your trucks." It turns out you weren't in town yet, but maybe that was really a message from above?

Hahaha. Yeah, I didn't remember to turn the radio on until I arrived. :blush:

As for the message...last month I owned 3 N/A 6.2 trucks. I now own zero of them, even without planning such. So maybe you're right? :thinking:

Sorry to hear this going down Ethan. I know it’s frustrating. I hope Burb gets together quickly and you’re able to mess with the K5 later and figure out a solution. As for engines, I know of a couple 6.5 blocks for sale.
 
Yep I'm bummed to see anybody barf a crank right before a planned trip.

Best bet is get the burb rolling and deal with the K5 when you get back . I know campy you don't want to hear this, but for reliability sake just stuffing a carbed small block in there would be the quickest path down a road for reliability. Granted it's got to be a decent used with solid compression, but you won't have the fear of impending doom wondering what might break next.

Getting another 6.2 or 6.5 takes the need for swap specific parts like accessory drive, mounts and such, but you are back to the same stuff again.

I guess it really comes down on what the long range plans are. If it's going to kept or sold.

Good luck either way you plan on going.

Thanks. The bigger problem is that I don't have much use for this truck, and have gotten bored with it. At this point I don't have a direction I want it to go. I do want to do an OBD2-compatible MPFI swap in the nearish future, but this is not a good candidate for that (because I still won't like the K5 format regardless of what I do to it). And I have my eye on a different vehicle format for the next project.

Grabbing a cheap 6.2 is the easiest way to get rid of it for sure, and a carbureted SBC is probably the second easiest. Talk about anticlimax. :rolleyes:
 
My biggest problem with the K5 has always been the way it sucks at handling car seats. Spoiler alert, next year we'll have 3 of them, and I'm not convinced that 3 in the back of a K5 is a worthwhile proposition. That seat is way narrower than I'd prefer.
 
So I have no idea what direction I want to go. Fortunately I have the luxury of taking it off DD duty while I think about it for a bit. :thinking:

There’s another option with the blazer, remove the Detroit, NV4500, and whatever other goodies that are in it and ditch the rest. Maybe the 6.2 dying is the excuse you need to get rid of it? You can sell the NV4500 swap parts for a pretty decent amount

I would love to turn it into money and move on to better projects. I currently think it's worth a lot more as a running truck. My former plan was to list it for sale locally after the camping trip, to see how much it would bring.


But shoot me an offer for the parts you want. Obviously I have absolutely everything required to make this setup work in any square truck, minus one crankshaft. :rolleyes:
 

Yeah. And get this...we hit up exactly the same trail, and turned around at almost exactly the same spot and headed back the exact same route to Marquette. Except I didn't make it as far as you did, I killed the engine as soon as the knocking started.

Shall we declare that trail haunted? :rolleyes:
 
On the bright side, I made it a few feet further up the climb before we decided to scout the the mud pit at the top. We decided it wasn't worth crossing the soup. So it was almost exactly the same ride as last time.

These trucks are odd some bring a lot running others a lot in parts.

Let me run some numbers and I'll get back to you.
 
Ethan - caught up on your thread, and I’m sorry to read about the crank carnage. Especially after your trans swap, that’s so frustrating. Everything can be rebuilt, or converted to time and money for the suburban.

I’ll follow with interest.

Maybe this is the silver lining. You didn't give it a particular flogging on our scouting run, so that crank was just due to break. If not for this trip it would have broken on the main trip, with your whole family and piles of gear. Plus it broke on an actual paved road and not in the middle of the woods. Nobody had to break off from the main trip to tow you and it didn't happen while you were driving across the state solo. So if you get the Burb up, this is kind of a win. I know it sucks.

I've broken major components while miles deep in the woods, it beyond sucks to first get it dragged back to pavement, then towed home from there.

Running or parting it. This might just be your sign to be rid of it and focus on your burban.

You're right that it could have been much worse, and getting the burb up will be a win.

But that doesn't make this episode a win. Going from having almost 2 trucks to having almost 1 truck is still a loss.

Yep. A bad fuel pump left me stranded offroad last October. Running solo and outside the reach of tow trucks. 'Twas an interesting ride home, longer and more stressful than this one.
