The Green Grendel

I do it the same way Martin does it, slow and deliberate, because it'll literally just pop in once you get the parts lined up.

Did you grease the splines and snout of the input shaft?

I usually slam them in by hand. The jack is just there to help.

One hand turning the output shaft, while using the other to move it around. You do have it in gear right?

Martin

Yes it's greased, yes it's in gear, and yes, I've turned the shaft while inserting it. It's pretty easy to get it engaged with the clutch disc (after which I cannot turn the shaft anymore), it's getting the pilot bearing lined up that 's vexing me.

Quick question, did you test the pilot bearing on the shaft before installing it? I have had that issue before where the pilot bearing was not correct and there was no way it would fit on the trans. Just a thought

I'm pretty sure I checked it. It appeared to be a fit. I even had the thought that it would make more sense to install it on the shaft instead of installing it into the flywheel. There was no inner race, the needle bearings were held in place by grease. My primary reason for dropping the tranny back down was to check the bearing and make sure that one of the needles hadn't fallen out of place (and become a wedge). I do remember that it was a tight fit sliding into the flywheel (light tapping required to drive it into place). I remember thinking that it would be a pain to remove if it ever had to come out.

Neither flywheel came with a pilot bearing. And as previously said, only one of the clutch sets came with one, either. I guess I'm confused as to why/how the bearings were missing. There's no way the bearing I have would just fall out accidentally. :dunno:

Spent another 2 hours out there tonight. Took the clutch & pressure plate off and the tranny slid right into place like it should. Lined up the clutch disc, tightened down the pressure plate, and I'm back to where I was. I can reasonably easily get the shaft into the clutch, and I have a small amount of wiggle room at that point, but I have not been able to get it into the pilot bearing.

I used to be losing interest in the project, now I'm losing interest AND hope at the same time. :doah: :zombie19:

Maybe this was asked but did you use one of these to line up the clutch on the flywheel?

Ok lol jusssst checkin. Splines are the same on the clutch disk too?

Yes, I tried out the clutch disc on the input shaft before I started any of this hoisting stuff. I'm confident that I have gotten engaged with the clutch a couple of dozen times ('cause the output shaft locks into place).

My heart just skipped a beat... I was thinking about mine and for a second I thought I forgot my throw out bearing!

I have a consistent feeling of dread hanging over this project, caused by the fact that this is a take-out tranny. I have no idea whether it needs a rebuild, I decided to try it first and rebuild later if needed. Having found out how irritating this job is without a shop, I'm wondering if I chose poorly. :dunno:

In fact, the whole project is something of a white elephant. Neither of us particularly wants a K5, we want a camping Suburban. Doing this tranny was intended as a practice run for the real deal (Suburban also needs a tranny). If it turned out well I would have a winter beater for pulling folks out of ditches, but I've never had much use for this rig. So far it's just convincing me that K5s are a waste of time.

3 doors < 6 doors. :deal:
