The Green Grendel

P.S. - the Ranger has continued to work well with the new oil filter, so I didn't wind up touching the seal. Which is probably bad for me, as I clearly need the practice.

That's awesome. Rattle, rattle, rattle. Shift. Who needs a tach when you got sound like that? Kudo's on the shifter too.

Good job on sticking with it and getting that beast back together!!

It's very rattly. Add more oil

The tranny? That's actually the purpose of posting the video. The 4th and 5th synchros are annoyingly noisy. 1,2,3, and R engage perfectly. 4th makes noise but slides promptly into gear. 5th isn't happy at all. It did begrudgingly engage, but I don't consider that reasonable. Haven't opened the case to see what I own yet, but that's on my list.

Clutch and T-case aren't hooked up yet, this was just a brief gearbox test to ensure functionality. 5th is back in the tail housing, and I can't see fluid back there yet, so maybe my next step is mounting the T-case and raising the oil level before I get too worried.

But otherwise, it is finally in.

Good grief, when is the LS 6.2 swap?

Get outta my thread! :haha: :pimp: :wink1:

The LS swap will happen when I get tired of playing with oil burners. So far it's still fun; when that changes, I'll find something else to play with. And, yes, it will be something new enough to have MPFI if I ever switch back to smelly explosive fuel.

I do it the same way Martin does it, slow and deliberate, because it'll literally just pop in once you get the parts lined up.

This is what finally happened. I bought a handful of bell housing bolts that were 2" too long and used them to line up the BH (still couldn't get it close). It turns out that I hadn't quite been square to the block before, swinging the tranny on the crane had messed with my angles. The bolts forced it to stay fairly well lined up while I wiggled it back and forth. After some poking and prodding it popped right into place.

Wifey helped a bunch with this, and we also cleaned up the parts pile a bunch today. Shop time is a whole lot more fun when I'm actually out in the shop. ;)

Glad to hear that. I agree when not agrivated and things go well it's still pleasant.

Did you get the correct sychromesh sauce GM recommends for the 4500?

I have not filled the tranny yet, it is still in take-out condition. It's neither dry nor overflowing. It will be brought up to proper spec.

I am aware of the $pecial $ynchromesh fluid GM calls out for the NV4500. I do have 2 questions, though. What fluid did Dodge use in their NV4500 cases? And does GM recommend the same fluid for the NV3500?

If I'm not mistaken, Dodge calls for a similar stupidly expensive oil. Here's the specs with GM part #'s. 4500 first (bold) second is the 3500. Taken from the 2003 Silverado owners manual.

Manual Transmission (5–Speed with Low Gear, RPO MW3)

GM Goodwrench Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. U.S. 12346190, in Canada 10953477) or equivalent SAE 75W-85 GL-4 gear oil.

Manual Transmission (5–Speed without Low Gear, RPO MG5)

Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. U.S. 12345349, in Canada 10953465, or equivalent).

Thanks, Rob! That's exactly what I was looking for. :waytogo:
