The Green Grendel

I think you'll love the DD duty. I'm not driving mine every day, but at least once or twice a week. It's those DD road miles that will build up the trust level in the rig and get your comfort up to stretch it's legs on some longer drives later.

Yes. When the weather breaks we will resume our normal habit of weekend camping our way across da U.P. I would definitely prefer to go exploring this rainy region in an enclosed vehicle, I got tired of the pickup the first time we had our gear get soggy.

So building confidence is important.

Meh, I am pretty much over it. You have probably noticed I have ( for the most part) left you alone about it.
I accept you for who you are. And those type of things don't bother you. I happen to be ocd about that kind of thing.

I do think this needs 33 all around though...

Long-term, this truck needs a new blinker/wiper switch, as it barely activates the blinker circuit right now. I'll give it a few drives and see if it gets better. Also, the wipers barely move, and only when the switch is activated (they don't finish the cycle after the power gets cut). And the washers do not spray. This will be important when the snow starts falling. Which is currently scheduled for Sunday evening.

Sounds identical to my K5.

I updated the description above. For all the upgrades that happened through the years, I actually like the 83-down style of having the wiper control on the dashboard. And same for the stomp switch on the headlights.

Oh...that's the real problem here. I forgot. I only have high beams, I cannot get the headlight switch to move into the other position. That's why the switch needs to be replaced. It has a physical problem beyond just not really doing justice to the blinkers.

Yep, we are all different, with different priorities. Personally, I don't like throwing my wallet at a gas guzzler on a regular basis. Prime example being the guy who commutes to work in a big block. :wink1:

Someday you guys are all going to kick me out because of this radical idea.

Lots of similar issues on my truck when I got it.

Sounds simple, but nearly all of my electrical woes were fixed by unplugging said device, cleaning the connection, and plugging it back in.

Yeah. I took some sandpaper and cleaned up my arc-burned input terminal on the fan switch. And now I magically have a blower again. :thumb:

What does my daily driven 454 have to do with it... Lol

I agree. But 33s are a little big for the front, it starts to get into rubbing issues if the truck articulates much. People do run them on stock-height rigs, and I might do that some day. But for now I have this perfect set of 31s to use up before I can buy new ones. ;)

Outstanding. Good looking truck, and what a great payoff.

This guy going camping?

David

Thanks.

I have yet to own a vehicle that didn't participate in the camping lifestyle at some point. :thumb:

It will hafta wait, though. We're looking at sub-zero temperatures this week.

I went to buy this for the other truck yesterday.

Wound up bringing home a bunch of other stuff, too. For this truck I found a speedometer cable and the 2-prong weatherpack connector that I need for the reverse switch. Pity I already buttoned things up.

But I did already install the speedometer cable. @Rugby_7, assuming this works I won't be needing a cable anymore.

Only as long as you need for the glow plugs. See you in Moab!

I haven't done a whole lot of wintertime diesel driving (due to salt). I'm kinda curious how quickly the engine pops off at zero degrees. Big Blue is pretty grumpy, but this engine is a bunch less tired, and the 24V starter whips it over a bunch faster than even the 12V MT-28 gear reduction starter. The two winters that I drove Big Blue I remember conscientiously trying NOT to drive it to work in sub-zero temperatures. I knew I could get it started in the morning, thanks to the block heater. But I wasn't sure whether it would start after 8 hours of sitting in a cold parking lot. I don't remember what my coldest successful non-heated start was, but it was somewhere near zero degrees.

I do know this, The Grendel starts pretty quickly at 20 degrees, and I'll be taking notes going forward.

Ahh, EFI for the win. The K5.3 started this morning at 15 degrees on first hit of the starter. Had that been my 75 with the 350 and Q-jet I'd would have been out there for 30 minutes trying to get it to cough to life. I can imagine an oil burner being pain to get lit off without help at low temps.
