redoing this cub cadet 2284 model . they were a 3 year run 95/96/97 was it but share a lot of parts from other models .

hydro fluid was BLACK and GREY and the filter was so nasty on the outside i didn't know it was a white painted filter until the 2nd pressure wash and de-grease job on the hydro unit . the rear cover also come off for a bad gasket swap out and this let me scrape out all the rest of the slime that couldn't get past the internal dam wall and out the drain plug hole.

next was the front axle and steering system . the wheel bearings were so bad i could get pos/neg camber in the 15* range both sides if i had to guess . then the king pin bushings had play and after a good tear down and parts wash i only found 3 worn bushings and 1 was m.i.a ....... this let the spindle get chewed up a little and the i-beam also got a good egg shape going were there was no bushing . the bushings are not available to my dealer anymore and he could only find 3 n.o.s ones at just over 40.00 each . well since the i-beam needed a over boar to correct the egg hole on the upper my machinist buddy said he would make me bushings if i got him a stick of brass or bronze . i scored a bronze stick here local at a machine shop . so each bushing will be made to size to snug her back up on the steering arms to i-beam with new king pin bushings of solid stock over the oem wrapped bushing from a flat sheet .

the second round on the front end was about 5 of the 6 tie rods had slop and play . with the full hydro steering and all this slop plus the i-beam play at the king pins it needed all new from a kit i found on ebay for 1/ the cost of dealer price and same quality by the looks of them . the center link for the tie rods had a pin in the link to the i-beam and this had slopped out for extra play so since he was making bushings he punched out the egged holes for this and made bushings and a new pin . i also forgot to say he had to cut the 1 spindle down and make a sleeve for it and press it on and turn it down back to size since the only used one i found was almost 200 bucks .

then the original reason it was here for me to repair it was the 60" 3 blade deck . it lost a bearing on the main center shaft and the shaft & pulley got so bad it trashed them beyond repair . i got a new pulley for the same price as the used one i found . then a used shaft for half price of new and a new key way to lock them together again . then a 8 pack of bearings to give her 6 new 2 each and 2 spares . the blades will get a sharpen job before there re-installed . then she should be ready to go finish mow here 5 acre lawn with her owner again .

oh and the headlights were all messed up so we whipped up a easy fix for this with a little extra kick spot & flood combo bar wired to stock switch .

he also was tired of the flat no real traction lug bar tires so i whipped him up some more traction with the tire groover hot knife .

layed out a idea to see if it worked . then tweeked it a bit and grooved them up . narrow blade head in the center two cuts and wide blade head on the outers .

the before and after on the front also .

got her almost together . the front axle was just a mess and got lots of work .

the mover deck when i pulled the other 2 blade hubs to install 6 new bearings for all 3 since it was here i found a more than a few cracks on the 1 side . if i had to guess i think it was almost ready to drop out . i whipped up to stiffener plates to add to the bottom after i cut and welded the cracks up and ground flat .

my plasma was a little hung up in the home made circle cutter on the 2nd plate thats why the inside is a bit jaged . but it just lets the blade spindle pass threw so its good . they got holes drilled and will let the 4 studs drop threw and all sandwich up in there .

this thing was kicking my arss for sure . :doah::doah::1zhelp:

got the front axle parts back today . he went to pop out the old king pin bushings and found some jackwagon in the past changed one by driving the old down in to the middle and popping a new one in on top . this made it fun to get out since the grease cavity is bigger and it bound up inside and had to be chunked out . this also kept grease from lubing any bushings and spindle in this side .

the other side we had to fix the spindle by turning down the shaft o.d. and making a bushing to press over it and turn it to the correct size . this was fun since all this work is done before they bend it from a straight solid stock bar of round stock they start with . he was able to machine in a true center mark and use his centering pin on the lathe and chuck it up and spin it .

then we had lots of play in the center link for the tie rods . so he over bored this and bushed it back to size on the i-beam and the center link . then he whipped up a new pin as the old one was tappered from wear on the ends from years of use . all this work he did snugged up the whole front end so i could put her back together today and do a test mow .

now for a final look over and regrease before we tell my buddy to come pick it up .

oh ya and the front end all tight now like new or as close as it will be ....... it no longer self drives like its drunk .

Nice work! I like seeing things come back to life and better. This reminds me I really need to give my Toro mower some TLC. Been a great mower and I have not done one thing of maintenance on it in the last 7 years. Used and abused. My new yard will have less grass since I'm tired of paying for water. That being said I'll never own a tractor while living there. Maybe some day I'll need one when I own more land.

So after all this work is it costing more than it's worth?
I mean some of the work seems like it was beyond saving and I am not sure if it's as valuable as some of the older k5's we see here being resurrected at a cost of more than the clean ones still available.

new mower as big as this to do 5 acres each time and survive would be in the 5-7k range for price .

i have parts / machine work / labor around 1k in it . his boy picked it up today and dropped it off and the old man is already mowing the lawn and happy as can be .

this is a cub cadet 2284 22hp kohler v twin engine . shaft drive to hydro pump on rear axle for hydrostatic drive and steering and deck lift . she is a old school mowing machine .

I figured it had to be worth it but not familiar with the type so had to ask
