The new Garage

I'm tired of working in my tiny 2 car garage so I'm finally building a big (30'x60') shop to work in.
I've been super busy with work this week so we didn't get much time in the shop. We did finally make it out there for a bit last night and quite a bit this afternoon/evening. All the baseboards are installed, floors are cleaned, toolboxes are cleaned and stuff is starting to go back where it belongs (although I'm still not quite sure where that is for everything yet).

The Motorhome is back inside and tomorrow I'll be installing an ARB locker in the front axle of the Silverado and helping a friend install one in the front of his SFA Exterra.

It feels good to know I'll be working IN the shop tomorrow and not ON it. I also have a contractor scheduled to spray in the cellulose so that should get done before it gets hot.

We still have a couple things to finish up in the shop (besides the 2 post lift and cabinets), but last weekend it was nice to be able to work in there again. We had 2 rigs getting ARB's installed in their front axles and at one point my wife was in there changing the oil in her DD, all while the motorhome was parked where it belongs.

After building everything I have in a 2 car garage, I can't describe how awesome it is to have so much space to work in.

Man that is looking really good! I just read your whole build thread and it has turned out great with lots of room around your rv.

I do have a question, and I probably just overlooked it.

What brand and size doors did you go with? And are they insulated?

I'm going to go with sectional insulated doors in my shop, and probably liftmaster openers.

I don't know the brand of the doors, but they are 14'x14' 3" thick insulated. Even in the summer with the AZ sun beating down on them they aren't hot on the inside.

I just got a liftmaster shaft drive, grabs the end of the shaft the springs are mounted on, however i live in Cali and everything after the fires a while back requires all sorts of safety junk, battery backup, etc so I've lagged at getting it all running. The deadbolt and release work fine though. It was really the only option in a low overhead situation, but I love how it clears up the overhead space.

I think I mentioned it, but I am running the liftmaster jackshaft openers in my garage as well. The one thing I did have to do is get a helper spring. You can see it by the fan in this picture:

Since the jackshaft opener is just spinning the spring loaded shaft, it has a cable tension sensor. If the cable goes slack, it won't close the door. Since there isn't any weight pulling down on the cables when it's fully opened, you have to have a helper spring (or don't let the garage fully open) to get it started.

I originally bought 2 pairs, but discovered that having 2 on one door outpowers the "park" function of the opener and pushed the door back closed a bit after it was fully opened. A single one worked perfectly.

As a result I do have two of these that can be had providing someone either picks them up or pays shipping.

I'm definitely interested in them if you don't mind shipping. I'll send you a pm and let me know how much I owe you.

Welding screen

kinda what I was thinking, but I’ve only seen that in shops where a bunch of people “not welding” are walking around. Haven’t seen one in a garage environment. Or is it more for keeping spatter from hitting the RV more than protecting people eyes from burning plasma light?

They don't help protect people from the light, they only stop sparks.
I got tired of having bits of steel melted into every window/windshield on all my rigs. With multiple rigs in the garage at once, this protects the glass when I'm grinding. It's not really necessary for welding since the sparks don't go as far.

Ah, that makes sense. I may have to try something like that.

Is that something you got from a welding supply place? We could use something like that in our shop. I always have to remind people working at the welding table to look around and make sure they're not showering a brand new sign or a vehicle with welding and/or grinding sparks.

I actually ordered mine online from Akon (https://www.curtain-and-divider.com).

Cool to see this coming together. Do you have a list of lessons learned? I just finished a kitchen and bath remodel and have a list of things for next time, mostly design related. Nothing that is bad enough to have changed now, but defiantly things we could have done different from the beginning. Some of these things might not come to mind until you have used the space more. Just curious, it looks like a great use of the space you had.
