The Original Jaws Blazer Build

Its theorietically pretty simple, just time consuming and heavy....start by securing the vehicle from rolling without driveshafts in it....then as mentioned jack it up so the frame rails are about 2' high off the ground. Methodically remove everything attached to the 203, and when you think you have everything unbolted, secure the t/c to the jack with ratchet straps or similar, then make a visual circle around the t/c to see that everything is in fact unhooked. Pull the t/c back far enough to allow the coupler to dis-engage from the trans output shaft.
Then do the same with the transmission.

I need your honest opinion...can I remove and reinstall the TH350-NP203 combo by myself?
I can't stand the thought of leaving my truck anywhere...like the transmission shop...I am willing to try this just to prevent having to leave it somewhere.

With a transmission jack, is it do-able to remove and then line it back up and install by myself without anyone else to help....:dunno:
I just removed then installed my TH350 transmission and 208 transfer case by myself. With a genuine transmission jack it was not too bad. The transmission was easier than the irregularly shaped transfer case.

What is involved in removing the NP203 first?

a healthy cycle of steroids...

its a big heavy awkward POS second only to the sm465 in sheer unfunness to manuver around.

having said that, as others have said, it is doable... and you won't want to do it again anytime soon. have fun :thumb:

Any of you guys so picky that you won't leave your truck with anybody? Mine is insured, but it cannot be replaced....at least that's the way I see it. :doah:

Shops work on cars much nicer than your old blazer all the time. I love my truck but if I had the cash to have a shop pull and reinstall may sm465 and 205 combo I would take it in right away. These trucks are easy to work on especially with all the right tools and a lift. Drop it off, it'll worth a little mental discomfort to have it done and warrantied by a shop.

That being said i'm broke with a wife and kids so i always do my own stuff, I pulled the th350 and 203 out of my truck with my tranny jack and it went fine. I put a 2x4 across the bottom of the trans t-case combo and used racket straps to hold the front of the tranny on the jack and then another strap across the rear frame for the t case to rest on while I lowered it. It wasn't fun but It got the job done.

Yep, because no one well ever take the time to make it as perfect as you yourself will do on your own truck. I even get nervous if other people work on my truck right in front of me at my own house.

You can remove the trans/tcase if you put your mind to it, especially with a tranny jack, just BE CAREFUL, because it's a heavy SOB and if it falls you don't want you or any parts of you to be under it.

Good luck.

What he said! It would be insanely easy to crush a finger and just as easy to crush your face! There was a couple times when i swaped out my 203 where i was pretty nervous!

That may be so, but I wouldn't take a brand new Tahoe for my Blazer...

I wouldn't trade my truck for anything either, I love these old square bodies and plan on owning one for the rest of my life. All I meant by that comment was that shops work on brand new, shiny paint, computer controlled, far more complicated rigs with alot more that could go wrong than our simple old trucks. Don't mean to offend you at all, I think your full vert is dead sexy...:thumb: Good luck with pulling the trans...

Just go slow and take your time. I've had my th350/203 out twice by myself with just a plain floor jack. Make sure theweight is centered and it isnt reallu that hard

Do like I did and take the body off, then lift it out with a cherry picker....nice!

Or remove the tranny tunnel and use a cherry picker to lower the tranny and T-case in one shot...while not exposing yourself to a potential crush injury. I removed and installed a SM465/205 combo this way, as well as a NV4500/203/205 combo the same way. That's one thing I really like about the older squares, the tranny tunnel unbolts.

Its ture! There is about a dozen bolts and some body sealer, but it is way worth it! I just didnt want to deal with removing my seats and carpet.

Still waiting on the printed circuit from LMC...they said 2nd week in February...I ordered it befor Christmas :dunno::dunno:

I got the printed circuit Friday and installed it today..no change...the temp gauge still moves when I turn on the headlights.
I haven't installed the instrument cluster bucket yet...I am going to get to the bottom of this before I re-install it.

Anybody have any suggestions? I'm stuck.

Still got the ground problem...thought I had it fixed, but then I drove it to the golf range and it was getting dark when I came back and I turned on the headlights...you guessed it...temp gauge and fuel gauge went whacky once again.
I thought I had fixed it with a direct wire from the battery to the dash ground...this is driving me crazy.

Did you redo the gounds nearest your battery, they should be attached to the passenger side fender, and also I think there is some attached to the rad support on the right of the battery.:dunno:

I had some bad grounds there. that made my gages not work, not saying thats you problem, but it was mine.

Good luck!!

Yes I did...I ran a new ground to the radiator support, a new ground to the alternator bracket, a new one to the frame, a new one to the firewall and a new one to the dash....

I'm still not 100% sure I have the correct wire going to the temperature sending unit....I think I do, but I'm not sure.
