Hello fellow K5ers!

Normally I patrol the diesel websites, but I need your help today! While I was on Vacation, someone fired a .22 at my Rear roll up window. I have a manual crank that is broken, and so either I need to fix that, and get new glass, or just get a new tailgate.

Here's my question. I found a tailgate for 100 dollars with glass, but its electric. I'm told it needs a new regulator cable.

Would you guys take the plunge and buy the electric tailgate without knowing what could be right/wrong with it?

Thanks!

Guipo

Well it's up to you if you want to wire up the window. You could buy it and take the glass or go the junkyard but I would stay manual

i try to keep as few electrical things on my rig as possible. mechanical things have a tendancy to last longer.

Moneypit! We have similar setups! Yay!

I really need a new tailgate, but I can always swap the guts. Mine is rusty and cracking.

So you guys dont like the electric setups eh. Its my daily driver, so I thought it would be kinda neat. Good to know tho! Thanks!

I would much rather have manual rear window. The power window is slow and really kills your battery if your rid isnt running. I want as few electrical things in my truck as possible. Ive toyed with the idea of converting to manual but havent found enuff detailed info. The boneyards dont have K5s at all, like none, zilch, nada, so there are no options there.

I like the electric.

*Properly working" they are good and pretty reliable. Probably not as reliable as the manual (of course) but I'd bet you they get used at least twice as much. I know mine does. Sitting in the cab rolling it down to regulate airflow is a big one. Also don't have to ever lock it.

I've seen enough posts (and trucks) with broken manual window cranks to know they aren't failure proof.

The newer alternators seem to make a big difference too in how the window performs at idle.

Quick Side note, How the heck do you do signature? Do you need to be a CK5 Member?

sure do, unless you want to type it out every time :D

youve got a crew cab? I wanna see!

if im not mistaken tailgate shells are all the same, you just pull the power assembly out and replace it with the manual asssembly.
Hence, you can buy the power gate and use your guts.

No, I'm sorry, didnt know you had a crew cab. I have a 6.5TD and a NV4500. Its out of a 93!

ooo, I'll take you up on that switch, at least I can try it. PM me.

mines out of a '94, 38k miles, has the banks kit, 19mpg and slower than molasses on a cold day.

cant pm you, members only:haha:

my emails joe good @ hotmail (no spaces obviously)

I have 170,xxx mikes. Mines really quick, even with 3.08's, and I get 20. Cold dont bother it, except its sounds like its chewing on farm animals in the morning.

Do you get alot of black smoke? You might have boost issues. How did you do the Computer control? are you at diesel place?

Another sad note, my tailgate I was gonna get fell through. Doh! Hafta go to pick n pull I guess.

mine runs quite well really, no smoke if i hold the glow plugs long enough. im running 4.10's i wonder if its your gearing?

it has the mechanical fuel system so no computer control.

im not at DP, but i am in diesel bombers and towrig

You must have a very early 94 to not have the electronic pump, I thought that it was 92 and 93 that had the TD without the mech. pump.

I have both, and they are great. The 93 setup is definitly easier to deal with. My wife drives a 95 burb with the 6.5, and she only gets 11 in town, 17 on a trip. Doh!

I really love the K5 setup with this engine, it sounds great, and performs really well.

I wonder if the 6.2 pump was turned up. It may not be applying enough pressure to pop the injectors fully, which would make a lower amount of power.

Do you have a boost guage and a EGT? Its easy to turn the fuel up! ;)

no guages on this one yet, im changing the ones on my cummins, and those ones will go in the cheby.

I havent looked into turning it up, how does one go about this?

Its pretty easy. I think the Banks instructions actually have it. Page 14-15.

I cant post the link until I do a few more posts. :)

I've done it, and its not hard. Get the EGT, dont let her get over 1100F.
