The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
Still trying to lock down where this leak is coming from.

Is it possible that this valve cover could be leaking?

It seems to be the source of the wetness, and I ran my fingers under the edge of the cover and it was definitely wet, but with clear/clean oil...

I get that I just put new oil in it ... twice, but that oil gets black pretty quick. But I can’t imagine what else it might be. Maybe I need to tighten down the valve cover bolts a little more?

They look ancient. That's why I asked you about them right off the bat. You just disturbed them while messing with the hard lines. It would be fairly normal for one or two to let loose.

Fair point. I’ll add it to my list of things to replace and will also double check to make sure they’re well connected.

If they were leaking, wouldn’t the fluid around them have a distinct diesel fuel smell?

Yes. Eventually. Just like an oil leak will have the distinct smell of oil. Eventually. ;)

The black on the manifold isn't fuel. But is it fresh? Or is it just leftover from before the reseal?

:dunno:

It looks fresh to me. But when I looked at older pictures I saw some of the same stuff. Still, I found fresh clean oil under the lip of the valve cover. Which I found odd because when the oil pan was leaking with the new gasket, the new oil had already turned black

Check the dipstick if you're not sure about the color.

Well I checked the valve cover bolts and they were definitely loose. Must have come loose bc I definitely snugged them up with blue loctite. Tightened them back up and went for a long drive and still leaking. Not sure if either the cover is warped or the silicone seal got messed up during installation. At this point I figure I’ll just have to redo it.

So my Ace Hardware pipe clamp wasn’t working out to hold my air filter to the fender. The sheet metal screws just weren’t holding on. I thought about welding some nuts to the fender, but decided to just remove the extension tube completely and have the filter right at the end of the intake horn. I’ll hang on to the extension tube and put it to use when I install my snorkel. For now, this will do just fine.

And then, I let my wife use the truck to take the boys to the dentist. It’s just across the street.

Still have lots to do, but it’s functional.
