The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
Well so far so good with the valve cover seal. Seems to be holding up just fine.

There are other things leaking though. Pretty sure I’m going to have a rear main seal to replace at some point this year.

Pretty sure the #3 injector is leaking fuel. Could have come loose in all of the wrenching I did with the VC, or could be those return lines. I’ll start by replacing the return lines and making sure the injector is tight and will go from there.

Question: is it normal for the oil pressure to be high when the engine is cold? Normal warm idling pressure is 40psi but when it’s cold, idling pressure is 60psi and if I drive it while it’s cold the pressure will shoot up to 70psi+ when on the throttle. If I let it idle for 5-10 minutes before driving, idling pressure will return to 40psi and then pressure under throttle may get up to 45-55psi. I *think* all of this is normal, just want to be sure.
That's perfectly normal

Oil is normal, though a good pressure regulator should keep the needle in more or less the same place. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you have some pressure. You never get cold enough in Florida to gel up your oil and have oil starvation.

As for ancient, crusty injector return lines...they start leaking if you look at them wrong. If you're in doubt about the leak source, change em out. Check that the upper injector body hasn't started unscrewing from the lower half. Easy thing to do when unscrewing injector lines.

Thanks for the tips. I’m sure a new pressure regulator is in order, and new return lines are on the way. I’ll definitely check to make sure the injector body is tight.

I’m sure a new pressure regulator is in order,

Did you miss the part where I said not to worry about it?

Don't overthink this.

If you are determined to mess with it, definitely check the measurements with a second (mechanical) gauge. Your old gauge and sending unit are significantly less reliable than your oil pump.

Didn’t miss it. I think I meant to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if the sending unit was bad.

And I overthink everything. It is my downfall.

I think mostly I am just enjoying the learning process.

New injector return lines are here. Picked them up from Leroy Diesel. Nice braided push on pieces. If any are leaking, should definitely solve that problem and at the very least will cure that “ancient crusty” appearance issue ... :saweet:

So thanks to my job, I've gotten relatively proficient in Excel, and thought I'd use it to start tracking some metrics on the truck. Here's what I have for right now. MPG was really good in late 2017, around 16-18 MPG, then it dropped to 13MPG and has stayed between 12MPG and 15MPG ever since. With exception for an obscure 20MPG at the beginning of our trip to north Georgia, which I question the accuracy of. Readings were somewhat inconsistent during early ownership, but have been more religiously recorded over the last year or so.

I thought it would also be interesting to keep an eye on how many miles I put on it. So far, the monthly miles is based on the odometer readings that I have captured when filling up. There are large lengths of time where there is no mileage, either due to failure to record the odometer early on in ownership, OR, because those months are the months the truck was out of service for major projects. Going forward, I'll start recording the odometer at the first and last day of each month.

Anyhow, I thought I'd share.

Not much to update. Still need to get those new injector return lines installed. Need to wire the starter directly to the battery (with relay, etc.) as recommended by @imiceman44 to help with hot starts. Other than that, it’s running pretty reliably.

Sharing a video of my drive in this morning. Bridge climbing is about the only climbing this rig sees on a regular basis.

That M998 intake really opens the 6.5 up.

Sorry for the length, shakiness, and sniffles. It is what it is.

Little side project using some scrap wood and an extra valve cover. Needed a place to put some books I had stacked on my desk and wanted to decorate my office space with some kind of spare truck part. Here’s a little play by play of the process. Lengths of wood (different types) glued together, planed, routed, and sanded:

And then the final product. Stained, lacquered, and hung. This is the office. CK5 and @AgDieseler representing.

That came out looking really nice. The stain variation is pretty.

Thanks, I appreciate it! I would have liked to have kept it natural and lacquered it without stain, I particularly like the natural look of cedar, but I didn’t think the green of the treated scrap I used would be appealing, so I stained it all. Was a fun project. Has been a while since I’ve done anything with wood.

This corner of the room suffers from light deficiency early in the morning, figured this was an easy solution. Remote controlled, wireless, and has mosquito deterrent to fight off the zombie mosquitos.

That function will probably only be used when camping.

I’ve known for a while that the alternator connector had melted/disintegrated over time. Last time I was working on the valve covers, the housing fell apart in my hands. The terminals still connected, but recently started coming loose from the alternator, so it was time for a permanent fix. Easy little projects like this are nice. If anyone needs this part, here is the part #: AC Delco PT2288.

I guess this begs the question: why did the first one melt? If it happens again, I’ll know there’s an issue with the alternator. But for now, everything seems to be fine.

Are you sure you want to know that?

Ignorance is bliss, sometimes...

Finally got it to a pressure washer and cleaned off as much as I could.

The frame is in good shape I think. Just surface rust which a wire wheel should deal with pretty decently. Parts of the body though are eaten away. That was obvious. The tail pan and tail pan support both are pretty much gone. Fortunately LMC has replacements for both. The passenger rear quarter is still in decent shape. The driver rear quarter is gone. And the floor board (the supports at least) will need replacing (not anytime soon). At least I have a decent idea of what I’m dealing with. Pretty much everything I already knew.

Started working on these doors that I picked up for the burb, one window in one of the barn doors was cracked so I took it out because I knew it was going to be replaced anyways. Got it out and discovered the whole bottom lip of the window frame is rusted out. Now I have to decide if this door is even worth saving.
