Hi all. Found this site way back in '01 when I wanted to lift my '89 K5 but instead sold it and have regretted it ever since. Well at the beginning of '08 my wife said I could have a "Toy" so long as it could transport the family and it had to be reliable. So began the search.

About 3 weeks ago a '72 shows up on CL. I dicker with the PO and finally come to a reasonable price. PO said he parked it 2 years ago to start a restoration but never got around to it. It didn't run and had no brakes(found that out as we were loading it on the trailer). Has a 350(not original)/350/205 with 44 and 12 bolt. Came with a single wall top and a never been painted roll bar.

Well after a Saturday of wrenching on it and a new battery, fan belts, and master cylinder we had it cruising around the block. PO said tranny was rebuilt 10k miles ago. T-case worked like a champ. And to top it off the Power Steering is actually fairly tight. I was pretty happy with the purchase at this point. Even had this sweet dual exhaust with a custom cross member to hold it up :eek1::eek1:

Anyway now comes the rust. Not the worst I have seen but needs some help. This is gonna be my first time ever doing body work so it should be fun:o Think I have a decent list of parts I am gonna order but am concerned about not getting all the pieces. The Rocker Boxes are in good shape and I think the front and rear pillar supports are all there. But the rest has to come out. The bed has one silver dollar size hole right by the passenger side wheel well.

After getting it running the friends that helped me get her running(Thanks) needed payment so it was time to test drive it down to pick up some Crown. Hit the first bump and guy in back seat about eats it because we didn't notice the brackets to hold the front of the seat down were gone. Well a little inginuity and problem solved until I find the right ones around town.

Well thanks for looking and wish me luck. Should be ordering sheet metal next week and get to cutting and patching. Do these bodys move whan you cut them. Once I start cutting it wont move till the new panel are in place and the top is staying on until I figure out a extended roll cage and a long bikini top for it.

As for lifts/axels/engine upgrades.....well those are on hold till I get the rust gone. My wife said I get $1k/year for my toy so this year is gonna be about body. Also once I lift it I can't put it in my garage and doing body work ouside in the winter just doesnt sound fun:D It will be built for mostly street with mild trails and mabey a little mud. If I want to go extreme i'll build a buggy to pull behind the Blazer :laugh:

Well Thanks again.

Well Kevin, what can I say except "Welcome to the addiction!" :waytogo:

For help with the sheetmetal work, take a look at my "Might As Well" thread.... there should be plenty of good photos to help you along with the rust repair.

There are a lot of other guys here who have been down this same path, and can help you when you get stuck. Just post up a pic and a question and you'll be amazed at what people here can tell you to help you along.....

:usaflag:

That's how I got into em too!

"Look honey it holds the whole family"

Welcome back, enjoy the ride.

Welcome to the board and good luck with the rust repairs. Lots of good info on this board about repairing the areas that you have rusty. Be sure to keep us posted on your progress.

Yes Dear

Safe and reliable and the kids can ride in it too! :haha: I know this song. Everybody is a huge help here and no question too dumb, though I think I test the limits:rolleyes:.

Yeah honey, its only $1000.00 and I can work on it and the parts are cheap and its not small like a jeep so it won't roll easily and all the kids and our stuff will fit with room to spare. It won't cost much to fix up.:doah::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha:

Yep been there still doing that:D

Well thanks for all the input. :o:o

This rig only has plans for a nice mall crawler with some mild MT trails. Now that being said I do have plans(what the wife thinks) for a 60/14(because its cheaper than re-gearing the 44/12), 205/203 doubler(so I can go real slow as to not damage it on the trail), DIY4x FGb52 and the flip and switch(because I am 6'6" tall and like tall trucks) and toss some 37-40s on it(so it doesnt look dumb) but that wont be for a couple years unless I win the lotto. I want it to be tough but I really don't want to beat it up:wink1:

Gonna be ordering the tin for my floor pans Friday. Just gonna order from whoever is cheapest since from everything I have read and heard all the aftermarket tin is crap. And then go buy a set of hammers from HF. This isn't gonna be a frame off resto but I really want to try to keep it as stock looking as possible. If it wasn't for the rust in the pictures this rig is actually pretty solid original steel.

And stop saying this is a money pit....My wife might read this some day :D

Well got some time so figured it was time to give a little update. Since I have bought this rig and got it running I have had exactly 1 day off. On that day I took her out for a quick spin to a friends house. Good news is I found a set of nearly new tires(for free:D) to replace the dry rotted tires it has on it now but the bad news was Oil starts leaking. Get home and it just keeps coming. Looks like I have a bad head gasket. So now she is parked for the winter and will get an engine overhaul come spring. Also I just found out I am going to be working in Spokane for the next 3 months so no time to work on her anyways :(:(

But I did get my tin. The box was demolished when I went to pick it up at the shipping house but amazingly the parts came through just fine. However I have to say these floor boards are about worthless. Wrinkled everywhere and one has the right part number but looks like the wrong one. On a plus note they sent me 2 Driver side Rocker Panels and forgot the Passenger side one. Called them up and said keep them and they sent me the passenger side one for free so now I have one to practice with :D

Here are some pics of the tins. A friend was buying a bunch of stuff for his truck so I got in on his order so I didn't have to pay freight. Got em form LMC.

My replacement metal looked the same, full of rinkles. I just tried to cut out the rinkled areas I didn't need and pound the rest flat. Good luck.

Welcome to the asylum!!

Just an FYI, oil typically does not leak from head gaskets on Chevy motors. Oil does pass through the head gaskets in two places on each gasket, but it is almost impossible to leak oil from them as it is not pressurized, just gravity drain-back from the top of the heads to the lifter valley. Take a look around the back of the intake. There is a seal (or a bead of silicone) that seals the intake to the block that can leak and also you have an oil pressure line (1/8" copper or plastic tubing) that can leak/break and you will have a pretty serious leak. The base of the distributor can leak also, but typically it is more of a seepage than a flowing leak. Valve cover gaskets leak and can run down the back of the heads and appear to be coming from the heads themselves. You probably have a relatively simple fix on your hands. Use some brake cleaner on the area, then run it and see where the oil is coming from.

Looks like a fun project there.

Welcome to Empty Wallets Anonymous... NO really looks like you have your hands full. I am really spoiled I guess cause all my trucks came from Cali... I thought my rust was bad but holy cow!

Anyhow good luck on your project and feel free to ask any ???? everyone is really helpful

Not the greatest thing to see when you get ahold of new sheet metal but at least it's all covered up by carpet. ;)

OK winter has come and gone and so has spring and I Finally have some time to tinker. Got home from work today and started draining the fluids at 5pm and had the motor out by 9pm. I was pretty happy with myself since I had no help other than my 2yo boy and the wife helped me pull the hood. I had no air compressor since my friend is borrowing it. And half my tools are packed up from moving into the new house. Even had to stop and eat supper with the fam. Last time I pulled a motor it took me most of a day.

After I got the engine out of the blazer I realized my bolts for the engine stand went missing :( So I figured it was good for the night and will dig in some more tomorrow after I hit the hardware store.

Also stay tuned for a little build I have going on another project. I was lucky enough to get MNORBY's blazer body and have a frame to stick it on. Hopefully that build should start in a couple weeks. Goal is to have 2 running blazers by the first of the year :D

Once I get the engine back in then I should be able to start on the sheet metal and body mounts. Wanted to get it driveable then it is easier to get the rig in and out of the garage.

Also while climbing around the rig I discovered that the PO put 3/4 ton springs in it. I always new this thing rode like a brick and now I know why. So once the sheet metal is done I guess I get to try to find some 1/2 tons and try to trade for them.
