The ultimate K5?

I just figure if you loose the body it's not really a K5 anymore.

What if you go to pain-staking lengths to keep the winshield/firewall/cab?? :D

Ultimate K5 (pretty much mine 2 years ago with more creature comforts).

37's, x-over, OD tranny, lockers, 1 tons (for reliability), rocker sliders, full cage, AC, soft top, roof rack, bumper/armor, winch and 4 seater. Basically a true multipurpose rig. My biggest regret with the truggy is not having a solid camping rig anymore. It works but me and the misses just take the 2wd Xterra and don't venture off to far anymore :o .

I'd start with a 73-75 K5 and add a L98 fuel injected 383 motor. I'd Use 4-6 inches of lift and run 37" tires. Axles would be 1 ton with a selectable locker up front and a locker or spool in the rear. I'd want a clean body with a decent one color paint job (the one color could be from a rattle can). Basically look at the UAV when it was 1 ton with 37's. I would hack my fenders like the UAV (back when it was 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton). I am not sure on the tranny yet, but I'd probably get an nv4500 with a 205 t-case if money weren't an issue.

Ultimate K5

OK, I am new to this site. I have been resitfying classic cars for years and am just embarking on a K5 that I couldn't let go that cheap at an auction a ffew weeks ago. Here is what I am doing(doensn't make it right). I am starting with a 78 K5 plain jane, toasted 350 TH350 combo. I have a couple of donor vehicles. The first being a 90 Suburban loaded. I am doing the front end swap, TBI350 Keeping the TH350 because the burb didn't have the 700R4 and I don't have a TCase for one anyway. I am using most of the suburban wiring. I want to mount the suburban tank, but don't know if I can make it fit and couldn't get an answer on this or other sites.

The second donor vehicle is a 71 3/4 pickup. I am going to use the dana 60 FE and Dana 70 rear along with the Np208 from that truck. It also has some nice 8 lug custom wheels with new tires(34") I think.

I will probable raise the K5 3-4 inches. Possibly with the spring swap.

Oh yeah, I will be using the bumpers, tilt column with Cruise from the burb. Keeping all the serpentine components...

I will be using the burb paing scheme. It is gun barrel gray with white inserts.

I want to use the burb seats and console, but heard that I might have some trouble making them fit. Using all the A/C components from the burb. Losing the Hard top and going with a custom soft top. I haven't seen what I want.

I will be adding a 4 Point roll cage with some extra bracing made from thin wall in the rar rear to support the top I will make.

Might not be right for everyone, but it will give me lots of fun around the small town I live in and playing around the lake.

If you run the 208 t-case get a slip yoke eliminator kit. I had more trouble with the rear seals on that case with the stupid slip yoke. Also run a long vent tube, I had a short one and it liked to spew fluid in the rough stuff. :)

If you have a 3/4 ton donor it aint got a 60 or a 70 in it It would be a 44 or 10 bolt depending on year and a 14 bolt for the rear. And 208s seal just fine as long as you have enough slip in the case.

I like my roller 454 on nitrous- and th-400 2500 stall converter and stak t-case- I actually would go with a dana 70 in the rear again instead of the 14 bolt- just a tad more clearance without the fuss- Jess

everyone needs a little paint on theres huh- the rest of my truck looks like a rat-

The 71 is not original(imagine that). It has a dana 60/70 combination.

im in the process of building my "ultimate k5" i trying to do a combo of everything so im not "limited" to one type of wheeling. ill have the high body clearance for mud bogs, have flex for some crawling (eventho the cog wont be the best, it will flex very nicely), and be street lega and get decent mpgl. to me thats the ultimate

in the end it will be 6.2 (350tbi now)/ 700r4 or 4L80e (if i can figure everything out) 203/205 doubler 60/14 5.13s detroits in both disc in rear, x-over with hydro assist 4 or 6" 52's in front and 4 or 6" 64's in rear with shackle flip, net of ~10" lift with really good flex. top that off with 39.5 irok radials.

^those are my plans :)
