The "under destruction builds" supersize75k5 's driveway of despair and repair

Don't get your panties in a bunch - not everyone does the same type of work. A good work truck for you may not be the best for someone else. Let him spend his money on what he likes - it keeps the local shops in business :)

You are completely right, as I tried to stress that what I think a work truck is, may not be what one would be for him, and it's his money to do what he will.

Regardless, there are a few things here set in stone.

Lift kits have nothing to do with function of a work truck, especially one's big enough to clear 38's. That is set in stone, unless you are required, for some reason, to mudbog over to your jobsite. Haven't encountered that one myself yet, you?:wink1:

38" Military tires.... again, basically set in stone as nothing to do with function on a normal work truck. I know if I had 38" rock hard military tires on my service truck, I'd be re-aranging my sockets at every stop from them vibrating out of place.

I'll completely retract my thoughts if he comes back to list he plans to service rock crawlers and has to travel through the rubicon to get to them. But, more than likely, he's in plumbing, electrical, normal service work, etc. that hardly even requires an A/T tire.

Wow didnt know there were certain rules that I had to follow when using a truck for work...  Care to show me the stone that these rules are set in?

Who are you to tell him what he needs for work?

actually, i think he owns a cleaning company or something, doesnt he?

General knowledge.

Street tread (like a nice Michelin onroad tire for example) does well on city streets and highways. An offroad tread (say like a super swamper bogger) doesn't do well on public roads, but do great in mud bogging turnaments.

Ever heard the term "use appropriate product for application?"

Lift kits don't do well on most work trucks. Many times, work trucks need the bed be easily accessable. Crawling onto a tailgate that is a foot higher than standard heigth is going to be less functional, plain and simple. So someone that claims a vehicle is for function and needs these things need a darned good reason to justify a harder to use vehicle or just admit, it's for personal preferance, NOT function.

Wow didnt know there were certain rules that I had to follow when using a truck for work...

There aren't. A guy can put 44" boggers on a service work truck with 15" wide beadlocked hummer wheels and never even hit a gravel driveway, as long as he doesn't claim it's something it isn't, as in practical for the task the vehicle actually is used for everyday.

Who are you to tell him what he needs for work?

I didn't. I told him what I thought was impractical for his likely situation. You don't need 38" tires and lots of lift to drive down a public highway or city street from jobsite to jobsite, and said mods will likely hinder a vehicle with the most likely "work truck" use.

Like I already said, if he comes back and says his job requires bogging through 18" of mud or getting through the Rubicon, than his desires of military tires and lifts are completely just and I will insert foot in mouth. Until then.....;)

So...would you say his plans are completely practical and about function? Hmmm???:p:

I could care less what he actually does to the truck or what he does with it. I never told him what I thought he SHOULD have, just that I see his choices as unpractical and unfunctional.

All I want the guy to do is either show his plans as a functional mod (as in how this is somehow needed) or simply admit that his plans are for personal wants.

I just don't want to see him mess up another vehicle when it could perhaps have an effect on his livelyhood, after all "work" pays the bills, and a work truck is a tool to do so.:thumb:

Now, I've pushed this further than I wanted it to go, and to keep things sival, I'm out of the topic.

Good luck to you Supersize, you're a cool dude.:wink1:

damn I take the g/f to sedona for the weekend and miss all the fun!

lol

hmm

my thoughts, ill just ramble here so I can get back to welding, the truck is as of now on just the 285/33' all terains,

now as for why the hell I would want to put 38's on my work truck, well simple, same reason you just put welds and new black paint on yours, it looks nice, and makes driving it a bit more enjoyable..

function, hell no.. maybe some clearance as I am on some remote sites from time to time,

the plan was to get the long electric steps/running boards from amp research, about a grand or so, and that even lifted would make my truck more funtional. as for bed use, I use the front 1/3 for a nitrogen storage tank and a small assortment of tools, aminly just adapters.fittings and parts for fire extinguishers, the back half half holds loaners or junk and then a ladder I use to service emergency lighting.

I really dont use to truck bed for much, I just like the ability to load the hell out of it and tow, which however I usually only do once a month and only for a range of less than 100 flat miles if that..

"38" Military tires.... again, basically set in stone as nothing to do with function on a normal work truck. I know if I had 38" rock hard military tires on my service truck, I'd be re-aranging my sockets at every stop from them vibrating out of place. "

the 38's, well for those that are curious, mine ride smooth as hell, anyone who has been in my 86 can tell you the same, they are cheap in comparrison to any other 38 inch tall tire and would not only look unique but last longer than any other 38 in tire on the market. I have always wanted a newer lifted truck, haveing one on these tires and being a regular cab would give it a different look than most of them running around here, plus I think the black tephlon sp? wheels would be sexy:D

yes it would suck down some some mpg, i would regear to help get back in the power band, as for loss of power? anyone who had rode in the truck can tell you it has more than I should be able to have..and that includes with a trailer and truck behind it. if I feel that it needs some more power, well thee is always forced induction should I want to bring a smile to my face every stop light.

yes I love the desiels, no I did not want a 07 or newer one due to some worries about the changes being made for the new fuel and emmisions requirements. I am more than happy with my truck, what I payed for it and how it looks and drives.

the biggest point I guess, I love screwing with things, I love building things, making things nice, wrecking them, rebuilding them, I not married, I do well finacially for my age and demographic...

why not, that like trying to reason with a guy on why he should build a rowboat and not a flat bottom big block with a blower on top..its what he wants :)

and the welds... ewwwwwwwwwwwwww:D

for that reson alone I should spend some money on rims.. I should put these on a trailer or something.. :haha:

I have not decided what I want, part of me feel 35's are plenty and will put the truck where I want it, also I have not done the 38's simply because I dont want the truck to be more than 10 inches tall, so to clear 38's that requires reworking the front fender in the back on it..which is like hacking up a new truck.. not to mention I dont want to have the 38's forever, but I would like to do it for just a while then drop the truck back down to just 35's.

so..

the plan, put on 4 inch spindles and 35's, later add 38's and the body lift...smile and enjoy it for a few months, when it gets old, take the body lift off and put the 35's back on.

as for funtion, I never said 38's on a work truck had anything to do with funtion...its all for looks and fun:D

which puts me in my place..and you in yours, to each their own!

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. I and no one else can knock a guy for wanting something when he relizes why he is going what he plans and what effect it will have, regardless if it's negative or positive.

Good response Supersize.;)

well if it has wheels I seem to find a way to re-decorate it:D

had a bus blow a red, I couldn't avoid it, locked the brakes up and slid into it hard.. happened about 10am.. with in 10 minutes my friends tow truck was there, hell before the cops evan made it lol. the truck on my left and my right avoided it, one got lucky and the other jumped the median. I was in the middle and really had no options :( my anti-locked brakes locked!

had it towed to the body shop, got on craigslist and had found all the parts for the front off a 06 that got taken apart to be pre-runnered. also picked up a cowl hood since they are the same price as a new gm anyways. Truck will get the new billit grill I had already bought for it now I guess.. still have to find a bumper but i may just put on an arb or something, or stock i dont know yet. good time to upgrade!

i have not decided yet,

we both got cited "sucks"

arizona is a percentage state, you can be 100% or 1 percent at fault. I could have avoided it im sure I can accept my part of the fault if they swing it at me. I dont really have an interest in a he-said she said who's fault b.s

i may just do it out of pocket, so far I got the whole front end including the new cowl for under a grand:bow: :eek1:  after the insuarance adjuster looks at it we will tear it down, check the frame, the bumper, tranny cooler and rad shoud we damaged. we will see what else. im just glad it was a bus and not a passanger car, im also glad the bus was not loaded!

i really could have hurt someone had it been a car, a friends sister was just kiled in a chevy aveo, she got t-boned, the other truck an f-150, just needs a bumper cover..:eek1: i am sold on having a 3/4 ton or a real truck a small car just does not hold up sometimes when physics and weight come into question.my own girl friend is in a chevy aveo rental right now from her wreck 3 weeks ago...she feals real safe:rolleyes: i am just glad to be ok thats all.

sell the stock headlights and markers and run some clear ones. they really clean up the front of a white truck. sucks that you wrecked it, but it could turn out nice. I hit a deer a couple of weeks ago. tore up the grill and bumper. I got the check and replaced the grill with billet. it was cheaper then a GM one. after the deductible I had $700 left over since I did the labor myself.

the pics dont really show the cowl hood well, but there she is,

also put on an 03-05 style chrome grill, prepped it and painted it white to match, the 06-07 grill would have looked odd do to it haveing a gap in the middle of the center bar. still need to build or buy or have build a front bumper. warn has one but it is not on the market yet, and a local shop is working with arb to make/modify the 03-05 one they have to fit mine there are some changes in my year from the one they due offer. it really sucks and is aggrivating. as for the body work, I have a ajustment or two to make still but she is done minus the bumper.

next on the list is finding a royal truck bed, they offered one from 99-05 that appeared to be a factory bed with factory lights, but have nifty stylish bed compartments with side access:laugh: but they dont make them, I am willing to pay out my ass for one if someone know where one is used or new stock.:1zhelp:

after that its the lift, wheels, electric steps and re-gearing and computer re=program.
