TheCaptain's (Re)Build Thread

Those pictures are exactly what I have been looking for! Thanks so much for taking the time to post them.

My Jimmy looks exactly like your “before” pictures. It is covered in years of muck and dirt but surprisingly little rust. The cancer is mainly around the wheel houses and its interface with the quarter.

Once again, Thanks!

No problem...I actually have more around here somewhere if you need them.

Also, for what it's worth - I've heard from quite a few people who don't even bother with the rocker boxes on their trucks. Obviously the people who convert later year trucks to full convertibles don't have them, and it doesn't seem to cause them any trouble. It's nice to have though, if you can get them. I imagine it helps the body's rigidity out quite a bit. It gets you a few originality points too, if you are aiming for that.

Anyways...let me know if I can show you anything else. There are a few really nice original trucks on here too (paging Mr. Artzner) with good pictures that show the way things are supposed to be.

Good luck on your project!

<hyjack>I appreciate the help with the pictures and I have a feeling I might be bugging you guys for more detailed pix soon as I have been doing some preliminary passes through LMC and such with no luck finding replacement sheet metal for the rocker boxes.

I have a feeling I am going to have to either find a donor or fabricate the the metal myself. If I end up fabricating myself I will most likely need some measurements of the original metal if you guys don't mind. I will start my own thread and leave this thread relatively free of my off topic rantings :-) </hyjack>

In any case...Any updates? ;-)

Cheers,
Rufus

Well...it's been a little while since I posted last, and quite a bit has happened.

The shop where I had been getting much of the work done went out of business. It's a damn shame too...they were really good guys to deal with, and they did some nice work.

I managed to find a new place to finish up the body work and paint. Fortunately, we already had things in pretty good shape. The bad part is that the new place will be a bit more expensive...but from what I have seen of their past work, it's damn nice. The owner is the guy who does the paint work, and he seems to take his paint jobs pretty seriously.

As for the rocker boxes (Rufus): I don't think you are going to find them reproduced anywhere. There are alot of people who convert later trucks to full convertible and they don't even bother with them...they aren't really needed, unless you are going for originality points. You might be able to find a rusty set in a junkyard that you could patch up or re-create though...I had some luck finding the 73-75 Blazers in some of the bone yards in PA...but you have to keep an eye out for them. I'll be glad to help with anything I can though.

I'm still leaning towards indigo blue metallic for the paint...but I doubt we'll be ordering paint for another few weeks at least.

Two thumbs up on your attention to detail. And kudos for keeping the cosmetics close to original (especially the front clip). I do like the later-model steering wheel. I have that wheel in my '91 burb and will swap one into a fully-convertible Blazer when I get one.

:waytogo:

Craig, Capn, That is precisely what I thought. Nobody makes them. I will probably end up making them from scratch just because I want this thing as solid as I can make it. I watch these trucks wheeling and see how much they twist and it just makes me cringe.

Sorry to hear about the shop you are using closing up. It seems to be a common thing these days. :-( Good luck with the new shop and I hope they meet or exceed your expectations.

Cheers,
Rufus

Things are still moving forward...I haven't been keeping this thread as up to date as I wanted to, but better late then never, right? :doah:

Well...since the last time this was updated, there was quite a bit of tweaking done to get everything on the body done as 'right' as is reasonably possible. My truck had the not-so-rare issue with one of the cage nuts that retains the door striker getting out of it's cage. The metal in that area looked like it had seen better days too. The guys at the new body shop fixed the hell out of that one. They did some really fine welding and replaced a section of the sheet metal that originally held the striker with 1/8" plate. Since that cavity is normally closed off, we cut a small access port in the post to deal with the striker bolt nut. When it's all done, a standard body plug should make that blend in pretty nicely.

There were quite a few other little sheet metal issues that have been sorted out too. Now everything is about as straight as it's going to be.

As for paint...I decided to go for the indigo blue metallic that I had originally been thinking about. I like it...a lot. It looks great on the truck, and it's actually a Blazer color...my truck is a few decades older than the ones that were that color from the factory though. :D I was surprised at how much the paint itself costs...I had originally figured (and hoped) that since it was a factory color GM used, it might be less expensive. Yeah...how about no. :doah:

The bed area and floor pans are covered in bed liner urethane now...I plan on putting carpet and a decent interior in it, but that should keep the floors safe from rusting in case it ever sees any moisture. I am hoping it will keep the road noise and vibration down a little bit too.

So...over the next month or two, the rest of the body should get wrapped up. Now I've got to figure out what I want to do with the axles and powertrain.
