Theft Proofing your K5 - What to do?

I can't find it anywhere anymore!

I see reference to it at Pep Boys (think there is one in Puyallup actually, but last I tried they didn't have any, nor does their website that I can find).

"Pro-Gard" is cited as the company, but all I see that they are involved in now (if it's the same company) is police stuff. Kirban (Buick website) also used to sell them, and the steadfast piece, but I didn't see it there. Might be worth it to call them if you want to try it.

I will be honest and have seen bad things said about it, but no one saying their cars had been stolen with one on it. It's said you can pry them apart, but I tried on mine, you'd at least need a crowbar to bend it enough, and I believe even later ones were redesigned to be even more pry resistant.

That lok-itt might be pretty decent, IF they are made for our columns. I really liked the Pro-gard piece because I didn't have to butcher the key switch like the steadfast. Lok-itt makes reference to that too.

Lojack

Get it!

Get it back!

Lojack is great except for one thing... It only works if it gets near a cop car that has the system in it. And, Lojack charges the police departments for the system. So, if you live in a rural area where the police departments dont have a lot of money, then lojack wont help you. Well, unless the thief takes it to a more urban area where lojack systems are more common...

how can i wire switches so i can make the combo? i will run a cut off switch to the fuel pump, which i know how to do

Why not just replace the ECM or injector fuse in the panel with a dead one? Easy, simple, ain't going anywhere.

Edit: maybe this is difficult with AC, my truck I can see/reach the fuses no problem.

Wont that reset your computer everytime?

I did that for a while, but I figure that its better for theives to see that it would be a little harder to steal and maybe not waste their time.

My K5 had a clutch safety switch, I found it is a direct wire to the starter silenod, purple. It made a sweet place to wire in a safety, even the broken column and it will not start. But being lifted it is easy enough to jump it at the starter. I plan on a continuous duty silenoid in the wire that feeds the fuse block and some diode and relay set up to really confuse the hell out of someone.

do what my friend did, he got tired of his drunk friends stealing his truck when he was at camp after a day of wheelin'. so he mad it where you have to press switches in a cetain order to start the truck. lol

I am one of the only people who knows the combo

A friend had a Tahoe that his brother wired to where you had to have the Cruse Control in the ON posistion then hit the "Set Cruse On" button once, then turn the key and start the truck. It worked great. no one will ever think of doing this to start it. Im getting a colum guard for sure. Have thought about the Grant removable steering wheel set up too. A colume guard and a removable wheel would do the trick I think.

As far as the things in your truck. I have a Tuffy center console and a Tuffy locking drawer in the back of my burb.

I just picked up a 14 bolt axle from a local guy.

He was telling me hit toyota got stolen years ago...
He had one of those column guards...

They cut his steering wheel off...
Hmm...

There's always the option of a big ass 5/8 thick links heavy duty chain from the steering to the axle or something, just not very convenient most of the time, but most car thiefs dont carry big bolt cutters either.

That doesn't sound right at all.

Cutting the steering wheel won't do anything, since the locking and starting mechanisms are all underneath the steering wheel. If you removed the steering wheel you can unlock it, and remove the lock cylinder, but that's a heck of a lot of work for a thief, and you've got to have at least three different tools.

Sounds to me like he had a club, which I would do the same thing were I a thief, cut the steering wheel and pull it off, then smash the column. :)

Years ago, I had a boss that had a setup like Cowboy mentioned. He had 8 small identical switches on the center console that had to be in a certain on/off pattern for the car to start. When he parked he flipped them all up or down. Unless the thief rewired everything, he would have to guess the pattern. 8 on/off switches = 256 permutations.
I had a similar setup in a truck growing up (no key was ever needed to start it). This also proved to save me numerous tickets, money, and jail time. I would never figure out to proper sequence after drinking LOL.

I use a hidden fuel pump kill switch. And if I'm leaving it parked for a while I can also unplug the fuel pump from under the hood.

a guy i know did the floor shifter and the column doesnt have anything to shift with, but the N start safety switch still works on it so he just "shifts" the column into D and it wont start.
