I was thinking about installing a fail-safe but then I was wondering if I can just not run a thermostat at all? I dont care about the heater.

It would never warm up based on the ambient temp and how efficient your cooling system is.

Heat=power.

Thats whats in there now, and its doesnt open until 210......Its prolly just old and stickin I guess. Off to Checker....

You might consider throwing an AC Delco in there...lots of problems with the aftermarket ones, right out of the box.

At least it worked that long! :)

Of course, you know your gauge is right, correct?

Yes the gauge does read correctly. My motor will reach 210-220 before it opens.....and just before it opens, my motor will have a slight ping. After it opens, my motor sounds perfect.

Running too cold 160*, or no thermostat has been proven to increase engine wear. If the engine is too cold fuel does not burn completly and washes and delutes the oil on the cylinder walls. Also removing the thermostat can acually cause overheating in your engine by increasing flow. because the flow is unrestricted and faster. Eddys can form in the coolant flow where water can be trapped in the block/heads causing hot spots, even tho the temp guage reads cool.
180- 195 is best for 350s

I never worried about the heater myself so i'd pull the thermostat. I just didn't want it to stick and my gauge be wrong equalling motor getting hot. I think that was my uncles thinking also and probably why my heater sucks ass. I run a 195* in my blazer now

I just read an article in Chevy High Performance about running a cooler thermostat to get more horse power and torque. If the engine is running cooler it transfers less heat to the intake manifold and carb or tb and allows for a cooler (more dense) intake charge and with a more dense intake charge you have more O2 to burn and you can add more fuel to make more power.

Mine will not cool with a thermostat,at all,with any temp thermostat.It will heat up at hwy speeds.It's not because of a dirty rad or worn water pump,all that had either been cleaned or replaced and the hoses had spring's in em.I had to get some of the Moroso washers that replace the thermostat and use the smallest one.Mine always runs on the hot side 195-210.My radiator is off a M-1008 and will easily hold four gallons of A/F.

Im with throwing a Delco in, that is what I will be doing when I change housings soon. On my '94 Blazer DD, it had a Motorad thermostat that worked so good I never even knew the guage was there. And the failsafes are only fail safe if you overheat. When mine went bad, I went through three free replacements before I gave up. My "Super Stant" has stuck until 225F since it was new. I am turning towards replacing everything with Delco. Just my plugged nickels worth
