Thin-est oil for a manual trans?

Gonna distract this thread a little. When did transmissions start going to ATF in them - and what was the reasoning in that?

Mostly started in the eighties for better fuel economy and in some cases easier syncro shifting ease.
The oil specs are all over the place nowadays for various manual transmissions and in some cases the syncros can be damaged by using the wrong type.

Thinner oil does not offer as much of a barrier of oil film which is not as good for gear mesh surfaces and bearing/bushing life - but they aren’t concerned about product life span like they were in years past. It’s a shame.
