Thinking about a 6.2L Suburban vs. Dodge Cummins Input Please

No seriously, you HAVE to be kidding...:screwy:

Obviously he is and just doesn't know it :D

I would go with a sub and the GM V-8 diesel. People can dump on them all they want, I still am looking to buy a couple. :):waytogo:

I've sat in the dodge so called "crew" cab, it is not in the same league as chevy and ford when it comes to that rear space. If you dont have to carry people often, then yeah, its great. But if you have parents or grandparents who might have to ride back there... those extra inches matter. And if you have more than 5 passengers, you have to opt for the front 3 seat option, and if you have more than 6, your SOL. Your only choices are a burb or an excursion. The other thing is, the model years he's looking at, he's not looking at new anyways.

motor wise, the 6.2 beats out everything else for fuel economy, and looses to everoyne for the power. And the 6.2's have been beat up a lot- look at all the humvees. Not saying that the 12V and 24V cummins arent nice engines, but all the older dodges around here fall apart. And they fall apart after a few years, so your left with a great engine and everything else nickle and dimes you to death. Maybe the new quality is better, but i dunno.

if you need to haul a lot of people, and a lot of gear "inside"- there arent too many choices.

IF you would read what I wrote and not what you want it to read you would note that I NEVER said the Cummins wasn't a good choice for towing. I said that a PSD would be a better choice if that's all you plan to do with the vehicle. I later clarified that to mean only the 7.3 PSD and not the 6.0
Somewhere I got the idea we were talking about a possible engine swap, so a 24V Cummins or a 6.0 PSD are not a likely choices and I did NOT include them in my opinion.

Just curious, but why '94? I know that was the first year for the new body style. But was the cummins upgraded over the older version?
I kinda like the older style more, and I'd rather have a "real" dana 60 up front, not one of the crappy ones in the newer body style.
But is the engine changed that much
A "real" dana 60? I didn't relize my truck had an imposter.... I am sure you are refering to ball joints and the CAD. We can forget about kingpins, they are a thing of the past and ball joints are here to stay. As far as the CAD setup, it's strength is not at all a problem, it's the vaccuum actuation that has given it a bad rep. I have never heard of the internal coupler breaking. It's still the same D60 housing, differential, and axles with the exception of the CAD parts. THere is no strength difference IIRC.

The P series cummins. They are a TON better than the earlier models. Not only did they recieve basically the best injection pump around, but also some internal upgrades. You could get an auto with OD after '94 too.

Dodge auto's have a pretty bad rep. I cant substantiate it, but...Well, you can read other forums for that.
They do have a bad rep, but are pretty darned stout trannies with a couple "easy " upgrades. An aftermarket TC and VB to bump up the hydralic preesure drasticly....and a 4L80 looks like a 700R4.

Auto+Diesel=Very bad.
I completely disagree. The absence of having to get off the throttle everytime makes a BIG difference in acceleration when the spool keeps dropping with the manual.

Yep, yer right I know nothing about nothing. Tim ,yer bedside manner is decidely lacking. Perhaps you'd be better off over on POoR?

It is exceedingly rare to to see a Cummins pulling any desert race vehicle anywhere. There are 7.3 PSD's all over the place. That tells me something. I do not know about the 6.0's, which is why I noted it with a ? mark.
On the other hand, the Cummins has long been noted for it's better mileage. So, I stand by my remarks.
Who cares about desert racers? I also see a lot of service truck fords with lumber racks or a service bed driven by A/C repair men or what not, but no one that actually needs the truck for 90% towing. Look around, every other diesel pickup hauling cars for higher around here has a dodge dually. I am a farmer and know lots of farmers. Farmers almost always tow really heavy crap around. Most of the farmers I know drive dodges. The cummins dodge will out pull a powerjoke anyday.:)

I think we all relized that you said a PS would be better for heavy towing than a cummins, which is what we have all made comments on. No one brought up anythig about a 24V or 6.0...just you.

Have a wonderfull afternoon.
