Did you lose or gain any room inside the console when going from OEM to Tuffy.

What makes the TUFFY ones better, just heavier duty?

My OEM one is cracked in the back at the hinges but is in pretty good shape over all.

Is the tuffy taller, like the padded armset is actually usefull or is it still too low?

Thanks

The arm rest is very usable and I actually find myself holding onto the box in off camber situations to keep my ass in the seat (no 5 point harness:o) when I am not pluggin the trail.

It is heavier duty but it is a "security console". This means it is an anti-theft type box. It is heavy, made from .125" I think, and powder coated. It is equiped with a heavy duty tumbler and is lockable. The cupholders are also big enough for a Super Big Gulp:D.

I have my stereo in mine and that is why I got it but I am removing my stereo and unsure if I will keep the console.

I think it is worth it if you are topless alot and need the security for your radio or CB.

It is also quite a bit larger inside than the factory plastic console and has a removable try that holds stuff up high for easy access.

X2. Except the part about not keeping it.

I have one in my '86 and looking to get one for my '74. My steering wheel fits just right in it when I am at work and other places when it sits for awhile. My stereo is in the front slot and I'm thinking about mounting my CB to the back wall on the inside so it won't walk away.

They make different sizes, so space is relative.

The one I bought has plenty of space, heavier duty/locking IMO is what makes it the ultimate short of handmade. With the top off, you can put valuables in the console without much worry of someone getting into it in a short period of time.

Not to mention it's hundreds (:)) of times stronger than the stock piece. I can sit on it, crawl over it, etc., with no fear of it breaking. I used the stock mounts too!

I made a bracket for mine and welded a piece of angle to the floor for the rear of the box to mount to. Its perfect height for an arm rest but I wont rack my elbow into it when wheelin and cranking the steering wheel. These are not great pics but you can see how high it is. The mounting brackets it comes with I think are junk so I just did myown thing. The front uses the factory mount on the transmission tunnel. Im going to run my seat cage tube around and under the Tuffy box.

I just put mine in about a week ago I love it. I mounted my stereo in it as well it can hold quite alot.

You gain a fair bit of room. Much heavier duty than stock. Not worth trying to break into IMHO. I use the arm pad all the time.

I have my ham radio inside and drilled a hole for the mic to hang outside. Mounted my light switches for aux lighting on the front. The console is bolted to the floor from the underside of the cab.

So those of you with the Tuffy console like Skigirls, can you get me some complete measurements of the outside of the case? Include the door for the radio compartment if you would. I would like to build my own, as I really can't afford the Tuffy. According to Tuffy the steel is 16 ga, but I was planning on 14 ga.

hmmm this is something for me to look at down the road...
when I go crew cab and bucket seats.... then I can put a puter in there!!!!!!

Heh? Whatcha need a sixpack for ... you can fit a computer into a stock center console in a K5! :D

To wit, one each 133MHz Pentium with not one, but two, count 'em TWO, four GIGABYTE hard drives :haha: (Can you tell this was some years back?)

I still have that controller somewhere -- it's an old Alpine head unit I gutted, put in a 2x40 LCD on the serial port and buttons to the LPT. To think you can buy this stuff off-the-shelf these days, and I had to build mine with a Dremel :haha:

And yeah, I know you said buckets as opposed to bench ... but when you said "computer in the console" I suddenly remembered this thing...

I have had mine for over 5 years and I love it. I have a CD player in mine and plan to run a kill switch inside to eliminate any would be thieves. Its essential in the summer time when I have the top off and the doors off!
