Those that built their own roll cages

Sorry, hit the wrong reply, it wasn't ment for you, only in general.

rdn2blazer :haha:

Yeah, it's all good, sometimes I can't resist a good debate. And I totally agree that you had a very valid point about the seam. But actually, it was this that I found provocative.
i know DOM tubeing is pricy, but dont skimp on safety. save some money and use DOM. I'm not 100% sure but i think MOST sanchining body's of motorsports racing require a cage to be built out of DOM (or cromoly) and do not allow HREW tube to be used for safety reasons. just my .02 cents.

I don't think we really disagree, I just wanted to make sure that the representation was as unbiased as possible, based on my own biases of course... :doah: :haha:

DOM starts out as HREW anyways, and has the same welded seam construction. Where the difference is is the final operation which is where it's drawn over a mandrel. This gets the wall thickness a little more consistant and blends the weld seam.

DOM is great, however the grade of steel is more important to me. My HREW tube is 1018, and i'll take that over 1010 DOM any day.

My truck is full convertable and I feel quite comfortable and 'safe' driving and wheeling it. The entire cage is 1.75" x .120 HREW.

That's a nice cage, how is it tied into the frame? Are there plates underneath that meet the top and sandwich the body between?

Also, could you point me to an article about the metal alloy numbers you referred to?

Roll cage

I used 2 ins .120 DOM on my cage the JD2 Hydraulic bender had a hard time with it but in the end I am glad I did it

It's not tied to the frame, but it does have sandwich plates everywhere I was able to use them. I may eventually tie it to the frame, but not before I add a front cage section. Then I can completely restrain the frame from any twist by tying into the frame at the points where the suspension mounts to it.

Basically the last two number denote carbon content. 1010 is .10% carbon. 1018 (while still a mild steel) has .18% carbon.

Unfortunately, around here, you really can't get anything but 1010 HREW. And the DOM is available from 1020-1028. Like Rene said, that typically higher carbon content, and the "work hardening" aspect of DOM are really all that separate it from HREW.

That jump in DOM and grade makes it more than twice the price.

(anybody else hear a high horse coming)

How many of the DOM cage wizards actually have a cage? Not many. Every time I see cages should be DOM it is quickly followed by a "my cage [that I do not have currently] will be made out of DOM [that I have never priced].

I have a JD2 1 3/4 5.5 and i did a cage to a toyota we cut out the whole body except the firewall and window. off of the rock slider, along where the door attaches, up the window frame and over to the main hoop. we had a total of 9 bends but looking at it from the front you cant even tell there is tube. im going to do a "showcase" of the truck when we are done.

ill get some pre pictures here soon

Pics would be cool. I'm definitely getting the 1.75 5.5 die.

Added to my front cage which is 2". Used JD3 bender with 1.75 5.5 and it worked great. My cage is designed for my soft top to fold down. And it is 2 piece so I can install and remove it. I used mounting plates and connecting plates from DIY4x. They have great stuff for building cages. Her are some pics. Not as exciting to look at as some of the others, but it suits my needs. Going with an exo by next spring.

seschev3, thanks for the pics. I just got to looking at this thread again and did not notice your pics the first time around.
Well I now own the JD2 model 3 and purchased the 1.75 5.5. Also traded some work with Polyperformance and scored 300 buck in 1.75" DOM for free. Well not really free, I got to fix/overhaul a transmission out of a CJ7 buggie. In the middle of fabbing up my new front bumper with a winch mount ( I also got a Warn xp9500) and then onto the roll cage.
I really like how close seschev3 got his cage to the "A" pillar.
Will post some pics of the progress as it come around.

Here is how close my cage get's to the 'A' pillar and the inside of the hardtop...

hey rene, i found your album before, but can you link me to it so I can see all the pics of this cage?

Im going to use 1.75x0.120 wall HREW on my K5. I plan on beating the crap out of it.. and I'm not to worried about it being dangerous because of the HREW. From a cost analysis point of view... you could get several extra sticks of HREW, use them to add LOTS of triangulation/gusseting etc and the resulting cage would be stronger... and the cost a heck of a lot less. I like the jungle gym look... other people like... ummm... less tube in thier cages. To each their own I guess. If I was going to run a standard 4 or 6 point cage, I guess I'd want bling'in tube... but for what I'm gonna run HREW is more that satisfactory.

I can't take credit for the "a" pillar, it is a smittybuilt add on to the factory roll bar, but the rest is me.

This is a great thread guys. I think more can be learned through debate than through simple explanation.

I was thinking of using bendy straws and bubble gum to exo my K5. I saw one down in Mexico once, it held up pretty well.

so what are the smittybilts made out of and are they any good? i more or less have no metal working ability let alone tube bending/welding and a prebent cage interests me.
