Those who've smoked a 700r4....

Well, first one had the pump die while I was doing +65mph on the highway. Took out most of the bands. Glazed all the clutches. Second one, let a friend borrow the truck while I went away on vacation. WATER= burnt bands and 2nd/3rd act as one gear. Third one, I broke the planetary "cage". Got a TCI and worked for me for the about 18k miles, till I parked the truck for "modifications". I finally broke the motor /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

How did u wire up the plug and vac line for TCC lock up?

My dad towing approx. two times the rated GVWR is what killed the tranny in Big Orange with 148K on the clock. The shifting fork between second and third broke. It would shift first and second fine, but would never go to third.

Now for the 2wd 700r woes. The first time it went out was probably the result of the previous owner and also me being pissed off that the truck has a 305 in it. It just simply fried itself. That and I think the flywheel is warped in the truck, causing it to wear the pump seal out on the convertor. Had it totally rebuilt and a shift kit installed. The truck would now bark second.

The second time, was again the torque convertor seal. Had it bored and a larger seal installed.

The third time, was a result of trash being in the cooling lines. I thought it was me seeing if would still bark second, but it was definitely the trash. Again, a total rebuild.

The last time it went, and is still the reason why it is sitting in the driveway, is what I assume to be age/wear and tear/years of hellraising/exceeding the towing capacity. The planetary is gone and I think some clutches are fried.

there are no shift forks in an automatic trans. sounds to me like you smoked the direct clutch, just as i did, in all 4 of them that i have smoked. shifted 1-2 fine, went to shift 2-3, and it would just neutral out like there was nothing there.

shift fork....direct clutch....there all the same to me. worthless pieces of crap.

Thanks for clearing that up for me though! :D

The most recent 700 that went out was in my dad's '71 c20. Clutches had been slipping for a while. One day they just couldn't hold anything, things got real hot and it went out in a nice smokey cloud of glory. :frown1: I'm not real impressed with them. I'd rather not have OD than pay to convert to a 700r4.

Heat is youre worst nightmare

Heat is youre worst nightmare with a 700R4 I do a trans service on both my 89 jimmy & my 90 blazer every year even if I only put a few thousand miles on them & the jimmy has almosty a 150000 miles original on it and its still doing good.. I had 2 plow trucks with 700R4 but put in th350 because of overheating problems. We are building a bulletproof 700R4 right now for a friend of mine if you want I can email you a list of all the parts that you will need but it is a little spendy.. I can get a th350 built for under 500 dollars but have over 1050 so far in this 700R4.........

never had a problem with my Raptor 700. I run a large tube/fin style cooler. I'm going to take it out and run the big B&M stacked plate one soon... prolly put the other cooler in my wifes explorer or something. Anyway, I agree with everyone that a TON of cooling and a remote filter are good ideas. Heat low = long life. A high quality guage to monitor yours trans temp would be a good idea too. I think some people are running them hot or not letting them cool off when they get to hot and that leads to a lot of failures.

Upgrade the sunshell(i think the one I've used was called the beast). Upgrade to the 5 gear planetary gear set. Replaced every seal & bushing. Replace the pump rotor & veins. Then concentrate on the 3-4 clutch pack. In all the high HP applications I've seen. They usually tend to smoke the 3-4 clutch pack and when you tear it apart you it looks as if all the rest of the clutches were new.

BTW the stock 700r4/4l60 use 5 clutches stock. With the right steels & clutches we (shop I used to work at) have managed to cram 8 clutches & steels.

hope that helps.

Interesting, especially since the original poster, posted up a year ago,,, :D hope he's got a new trans by now,,, :doah:
