Thought I'd share my Weldernator

So you are giving the field full current by removing the insulation from the screw to bypass the regulator and then using just 2/3rds of the stator? I assume one of the lines that used to go to the diode trio is routed to the output terminal and another one is tied to the case, but I didn't see how that was implemented.

I have heard of this trick many years ago, but I've never seen one actually built.
 
Where did you get the piece circled in red, did you buy it somewhere or make it?

Yeah what he said. I don't exactly understand what all was done on reassembly. I little more detail on that would be great! BTW why do you have to reverse rotation on your own rig? Also is your motor running off LP?

Reassemble after you remove those items from the alt.

Yes my rig is running off of LP.
 
That is a 12SI alt. The older ones are a 10SI (stamped steel fan like the charging alt. he runs) but the 12SI had better cooling and higher amperage ratings (110A).

After looking alittle closer i don't think that is a 12SI, looks like a larger case.

inside my alternator case, the capacitor looks different, but everything else looks the same. My capacitor just looks like a normal cap; just a cylinder with one lead coming out, then a bracket where it was grounded and attached to the case. Will mine still work?
 
So you aren't using a rectifier?

You get 115V with no load - any idea what the current is while welding?
 
just a thought,,but any idea of how much HP it would take to drive this with a small gas engine ?? 5 hp ??

thinking portable here .....
 
Hmmm... Good idea. Lawn mowing season is over anyway...
 
The HP wouldnt matter until you started welding. The alternator would become a heavy, heavy draw. If the engine was too small the RPMS(welding capacity) would diminish.
