Ok guys... I have searched and read, searched and read, and on multiple sites. I think I am educated enough to solicate further feed back on suspension.

My vehicle is a 78 k10 shortbox. 8 lug dana 44 front. 14 bolt sf rear. 4bt cummins, NV4500, NP241. about 4" lift and 33" tires. Don't plan on going any higher or bigger tires. This is a good driver, hunting and backwoods exploring pickup. Gets down the forest service roads and trails excellent and hauls dirtbikes great. Doesn't see hardcore rocks. Goal -Flex is good, but I am really wanting a nice ride.

When I got the pickup it had about a 4" lift. Had some plastic blocks in the rear about 3.5 inches thick, beneath the factory 52" rear springs. It sat nose high in the front with some 6 leaf lift springs with yellow bushings. I am guessing superlifts mega high spring rate ones? When I did the motor and drivetrain swap, I thought these springs might be great with the heavier motor. I pulled out the 350/465/205 combo and the front height did not change. Dropped in the 4bt/4500/241 combo and the front height did not change! These springs are stiff!

Now for the avice-

Rear- currrently running a DIY4x shackle flip and with perches re-drilled to move rear axle back and 1.5". Stock 52" springs. Rides plenty rough, but may be bearable to try some greasable bolts/bushings and live with it. Will 56s provide a much better ride in the rear?

Front- Currently running the 6 leaf lift springs that the truck came with but I removed the lower two leaves and replaced with a zero rate moving the axle forward 1". This did help with the ride, but now the srings are starting to "W" and I will have to replace soon. They still ride really rough. No sway bar and have a SKY crossover setup already.

Would 52s be to soft and squirly for my usage? I have read that some people don't like them on the road for a daily driver and I am worried that may be compounded by having the 4bt up front. I don't care if there is some body roll, but I don't want it insane. If 52s are what I do, then this woud provide incetive to do 56s in the rear and move the factory 52s up front.

Option two- and the one I am leaning toward is - tuff country EZ ride (HD pack?), and move the factory shackle mount forward to get a better shackle angle. Re-drill the axle perch to keep it in its current location of 1" forward. And maybe run greasable bushings.

Mostly need suggestions from those of you with 52s. And think about how I use my truck and what 52s would be like with an extra 250 pounds of diesel engine up front. Or are some of you running 52s as a daily driver and a 6.2 diesel?

Dang this shoul probably be in Garage forum.

mods feel free to move it if it fits there better.

Wow, that's a lot of questions. I dig the 4bt swap, especially since I have a 4bt sitting in the barn, just waiting for a home. I got some second-hand springs that were REALLY stiff, too. You might consider removing the 2nd or 3rd leaf from the pack to soften them. The bottom leaves have very little effect on spring rate. I removed the 2nd leaf and replaced it with a stock leaf from another set of springs, then removed the bottom leaf. These have worked out pretty well for me, so I just thought it might be an alternative for you as well. I haven't switched my fronts to 52s yet, but I'm not sure it would really be worth the hassle for your useage, since mine does great down the fast and bumpies the way it is. I've never like the rear spring rate on 1/2 tons, so I usually end up adding a leaf to them to balance the suspension out, but that may not be an issue since you have a shortbed(lighter). Hope this helps out some.:D

Thanks... may try re-working the front spring pack I have.

Really not to many questions up there, just context of the project that takes it away from the typical 52" spring threads.

Sounds like you've got a sweet truck man...love the drivetrain!

I'm a big fan of the Tuff Country stuff. Just bolt in a set of them at whatever height you're looking for (take some measurements to level it with the back?) and go! With the diesel up front, I'd definitely go with the HD version of the EZ rides. This may not be quite as cheap as mixing and matching some boneyard parts with some fab, but it's by far the simplest solution, especially for your application.

Yeti,

that is really the way I am leaning... It is good to hear that my logic is not flawed. Appreciate the feedback.

Definatly switch to 56 in the back. My truck drove alot better and gained a much better shackle angle with a 6in shackle.

The 52's in front would give you about 4in lift. If you need a 6in lift then obviously you'll need 2in lift 52's. Try finding a 52 inch stock or 52 inch two" lift spring in an HD rate. They are a much softer spring so the HD rate with be necessary with that diesel. From there switch out leaves from your old 52in rears until you get a good ride without loss of ride height.

Btw rock on with the 4bt/nv4500 thats my dream.

My 56/63 swap rides like a caddy, the only thing I don't like about it is the side to side roll it gets on a bumpy road maybe stiffer shocks later. It is a very soft ride though and lots of flex and a inexpensive way to do it.

My vote is with Desert Yeti. Tuff Country HD springs with the appropriate lift. You remove the bottom spring to have EZ rides.

tuff country bds or deaver. can't vouch for 52 haven't done it. yet

Odin,

I could do that actually. Got any pics or dimensions of your links? What did you use for materials? DOM and rod ends?

I made a 3 link (with 2 uppers) for the front of my rig.
The links are 2.0 .25 wall DOM tubing.
Springs are from the front of an 05 F350 with a gas engine.
There are more pics on my profile. I have a build thread in The Garage.

Thanks
It handles great on and off road. The ride is unreal, even while loaded or towing.
Offroad I can hit whoops at warp speed with ease.
Everybody should be linked:D
