Thoughts on building 1998 454

does anyone know of any headers you can use with the L29 engine with a NV4500 with an external slave cylinder? I am doing this swap once I return.

Check out Larry's "Polar Bear" build thread, he is running headers and although he has an 8.1 the exhaust is the same.

I'm running BB8's on my crew cab. Required a little grinding on the frame and I had to cut a tab off the transmission, on both a 700r4 and 4l80e.

I'm running a set of Sanderson shorties on my Blazer, they fit great and plenty of clearance for the external slave on my SM465.

That said, other members here have had fitment issues with the same headers.

Yes, for a 454 - part # BB8. There are pics scattered through my build.

I have the same engine and headers......No clearance issues.

I have a 1996 K2500 with the L29 7.4l 454. I had to finally replace my factory injectors at 170,000+ miles on them. I now only have about 182,000+ on the truck but no problems so far. After doing some reading, it's a pretty common problem, and the other problem is they are pretty expensive, even just for factory replacements. If you get the upgrades (I think they are Bosch) they are really expensive. My motor is 100% stock so I just went with factory upgrades and called it good. Most people change the fuel pressure regulator while you have the plenum (spel?) off since it's right there on the back of the motor next to the injectors. It's worth it to do both at the same time if you are doing it. But to be honest it's not a horrible job.

I have loved my L29 truck. My only problem is the truck is just an extended cab with no door access to the back and I just had my third kid. That's why I just purcahased a 1989 V3500 crew cab that I am going to build into my new tow rig. A part of me wants someone to hit me in my current truck so I can take the money and the motor and swap it into my crew cab, haha. But as of now I am looking for an 8.1 to drop into it. But I think these L29's are sweet motors that with just a little fine tuning can produce a lot.
What symptoms did it have when you changed the injectors?
I am looking at getting a 97 l29 with 110k on the clock. I can have the whole crew cab but might just take the running gear.
It lost reverse and it's been sitting for years.
It still drives forward but now it's not idling smooth.

does anyone know a good computer controlled cam similiar to the cam used for the junkyard 454 buid by super chevy?

It was a long time ago, but if I remember right it was actually the injectors were leaking down (common problem) and while it was running I could smell a burning fuel smell. Did some research and found it the factory injectors loose their seals and start to leak down into the plenum

Ok thanks

Pops gave me his old 87 with the 305. EFI was new to me. It kept idling high. Took a look and there was fuel dribbling from the bottom of the injectors where they seat in their housing. Over time the o- rings had deteriorated. Bought a rebuild kit, fixed it easy peasy. My first go at EFI troubleshooting and repair.

I have a 98 K3500 with a 7.4. I had rough idle and when the truck was hot and you turn it off for a few hours it would have a hard start. I changed the fuel injectors and it fixed the problem. I read somewhere in a forum that the ford 5.4 injectors are very good to use in these engines. I elected to stay away from those due to the fact I didnt want to replace them twice. I dont remember the forum as that was 5 years ago. Does anyone used 5.4 injectors, if so, how do they work?
