Thoughts on Ford Super Duty vs Chevy 2500 HD

BTW in relation to my dodge i drove a 00 f-450 with the 7.3, i also never had any mechanical problems with it either, i guess mainly because i made sure my trucks were maintained. The only thing about the ford was 10 mpg or less no matter what. Speed, towing did not make a difference 10 mpg maybe 11 at the most but usually 10 or less. I have towed a bunch of 6.0 fords into the dealers over the years and have seen many out of state guys get shot down on warranty work because they were not purchased at that particular dealer i dont know if that has changed at all recently though. Everytime i have taken the dodge in to get serviced it was always in and out the same day and there were very few new hd trucks in getting any major work done.

the new dodge 68RFE trans is waaayyy better than the old. but only came behind the 6.7. the 6.7 has been really good as long as you use it the way it's supposed to, if you drive it to the store and back like grandma, expect check engine lamps and partiulate filter problems.
tow a trailer, camper, drive long distances = happy cummins
drive easy, short trips, no loads = pain in arse cummins
i'm part dodge guy, i work on them, owned them. and like them.
duramax is a really nice car like driving/riding dependable truck too.
7.3 fords are also dependable, but don't drive half as nice as the chevy

I've got an '02 Super Duty with a 7.3 and a six speed manual.

Quite simply it has been an outstanding truck. I strongly believe the intercooled 7.3's are the best of all the "Ford" Diesels. I have heard many horror stories of problems with the 6.0 and some, though not as many with the 6.4. There is absolutely no way I would consider a new one with Ford's first ever Diesel engine.

IMHO your best bet is to search for a low mileage Super Duty with a 7.3 engine. You'll save quantum dollars over buying a new truck, and you won't have to put up with the Diesel Particulate filters or urea injection issues.

I've got an 07 classic Chevy 2500HD. I would really say you can't go wrong with one! The only issues I have had thus far are:
1- a bad stereo speaker
2- a reset of the computer due to the original programming having too tight of parameters and thus throwing codes when nothing was wrong
3- a bad EGR valve solenoid
They were all covered under warranty.

I have 95,000 miles on the truck thus far.

I am not the nicest of owners, it's the most powerful vehicle I have ever owned so, I at wide open throttle most of the time! :D

I haven't towed anything super heavy with it yet, heaviest was a Dodge Ram Cummins dually on my car trailer that I towed from Alabama back to NC for a friend (probably 8000lb total trailer weight?). Usually tow between 5000-7500lbs if towing anything but that's only about once a month or so. Good acceleration even with a heavy load! The manual feature on the 6 speed Allison is fantastic when towing, can engine brake nicely!

I still kinda wish it had a solid axle frontend but, to be honest it doesn't need one. If you keep it pretty stock (the only mod I have done to it is 265/75 R16 tires since the stock 245's were WAY too small looking) and drive it appropriately (it's not a rock buggy!) it lasts a good long time and gives a nice ride too!

Mileage is good for a heavy truck that is driven by an owner with a lead foot- I typically see 15-16 mpg. I have heard of much higher but, the highest I have ever hit was 17.

My vote is for the 2500HD! My second place would be a tie- either a superduty crew cab with a Cummins swap or a mega-cab Cummins (depending on what bed length ya need).

My only regrets with my choice are- I wish I woulda bought a crew cab (the extended cab can be tight for 6 people) and I wish I woulda bought a GMC (to me they look a bit more upscale and it would match my Jimmy better (would have both GMC!)).

Overall though, I love my 2500HD!

Here's a little pic whoring, a shot of my 2500HD towing my Jimmy:

I do have to say though, nowadays it's kinda hard to go wrong, Chevy, Dodge, Ford, and GMC all make great trucks! As noted before, they all have their weaknesses but, they all have great strengths too! Good luck with your shopping bro!

I`d go with an 06 or 07 Classic Chevy 2500HD. They had the bugs with the harness and cooling system worked by them. I just sold my 05 CCSB Duramax, not because I wanted to, bought it with 36K, sold it with 45K, only had 1 harness issue, and changed the fuel filter. My buddy has an 06 CCSB, tows a fifth wheel and plows for the town, he keeps it maintained, and with 130K on the clock, no major issues. He runs a Banks 6 gun, and an exhaust, the truck hauls a$$. The only drawback is the IFS, but if you drive them at work, you know what they are capable of.
