Well the friggin center pin bolt snapped when I went to pull my shafts and change my seals.

I drilled out the center pin and got it out. I need a source for a new center pin.

Also any thoughts on my reaming out my carrier and new center pin to just take a roll pin in place of the bolt like the older dana axles have?

Do you mean the lock bolt because if it is the lock bolt it can be found at any good parts store that has a help section. I just picked one up yesterday at O'rielly it is a dorman brand and if you ask the front desk they will not know just look.

I wouldn't use a roll pin, they really suck to remove--you think having that bolt break off sucks, wait till you cant get the roll pin out --they dont drill very easy!..

Huh the roll pin in my dana 44 was cake...

Either way how the hell do I get the broke bolt out then? It seems like it hardened as ****.

And yes Ive seen the kit but not really looking to drop $30 and wait a week when I have the pin out already.

all 8.5s seem to break at the same place. My unmolested 2.56 peg leg in my 80 camaro broke, and it never saw abuse! yet the 3.73 posi from a 78 z28 didnt. Its just how the jingle pin bolt was faultly designed or made. Dad got mine out by using an ice pick and barely able to tap it backwords out of the hole. Took a while but it came. Only had one and a half threads left in it.

Trust me man, your not alone.

I also have another 3.73 posi from a 78 (not my good rear) that they broke the bolt in, grinded the snot out of it, then welded it in the case. I was thinking about drilling and tapping the opposing side where the casting is present and looks like a blank copy of the other.

Well I did get the 2nd non threaded piece out with a magnet yesterday. I was busy POR15'ing the entire frame and rear housing though.

I got the pin itself out so my plan of attack now is to CAREFULLY lay a couple tack welds on the inside where it broke off flush and then weld a small nut to it.

Sounds like a plan man. Reminds me I still need to go trhough the 3.73 for my car when I take the current 3.42 out.

If you have a Dremal tool, you might cut a slot in it and try a screwdriver.
If there is any chance it has some locktight on it, be sure to heat it with a propane torch as you try to back it out.

Yeah I am gonna try notching it first. My new pin and bolt will be in at the speed shop wed so I'll worry about it then.
