Like someone said, a mechanics lein is the best avenue as you ahve the vehicle in possession.

File a lein for what it is worth or what you paid for it.

Mechanics lien: Sometimes can only be done by licensed garage depending on the rules in your state.

Bonded title is your safest bet: Normally requires certified vin inspection, DMV runs record of owners and you notify them normally by certified mail, obtain a bond (amount may depend on state), get vehicle appraised, any car dealer can do that. The bond is like bonding someone out of jail you pay a percentage and if somebody comes back for vehicle they cash in the bond thru the bonding agent and DMV.

Best contact would be Texas DPS to get the skinny on how to get a title LEGALLY.

Swapping rivets and vin plates = JAILTIME and felony.
