I'm replacing the timing cover gasket, crank seal and water pump gaskets. The Previous owner gooped up everything with silicone. Is this the recommended method? I don't have any clear silicone, but I have black and red rtv laying around. Or would you just use the gaskets?

The reason I'm doing the change is because I have an oil leak coming from near the bottom of the timing cover. After removing everything its not coming from the crank seal, but from where the timing cover meets up to the oil pan gasket (which I just changed with a one-piece). Any recommendations on how to put everything back together without a leak there? More silicone? :D

Gary,

first question would be what engine are you working on. If its a small block chevy you will also need to drop the oil pan or you never will get the front area at the bottom of the timing cover to seal.

original que of silicone...I always use a light smear on both sides of any gasket. Preferably the Ultra black or Gray on anything oil. Or and old favorite of mine is copper coat. If using the copper coat, put a light coat on both the gasket and the metal. Allow both to dry for about a minute then place together. CC works on the same principle of contact adhesive.
And as for me...if I am changing gaskets down there I'm gonna put in a new crank seal regardless if its leaking or not...too cheap not too.

good luck

Yep give it a little greasing with some black rtv on both sides of the gasket. As far as where the cover meets the pan I would clean it real good and dope it up with RTV like crazy.

Well I finished the job before I read this tip. From what I gathered through a google search I had decided to just RTV the part that touches the metal of the cover, and leave the gasket to do its job against the block. I did goop up the one-piece oil pan gasket on both ends near the part where it meets the front cover though.
