Tips and tricks for axle U-joint replacement

You open your vice enough to slip the verticle down in and rest the other ears on top of the vice. No need to tighten. Wack the yoke of the shaft thats pointing up with a good brass hammer. Normally takes a couple good wacks, flip and repeat. When you have the caps off the one side remove and rest the crosses of the joint on the vice again and repeat. Same way i do driveshafts and its stupid quick. No need to beat up perfectly good sockets.

the worst ones to do are the injection molded OEM ones that must be heated up to melt the nylon crap out of the grooves that retain the cups

First set of nylon injected joints I ever did,, I had no idea you had to melt the nylon out first....:dunno:

after stalling my 40 ton press,, I was like WTF.....that little bit of plastic can't be that ****in strong.....:eek1:

It is.....

Yah those things are no joke, strong as balls. Fun whwn you heat em up and watch them shoot out lol.

I've had flaming grease and nylon goop squirt out and scald me several times doing those...

:haha:

This is hilarious... I remember finding out about those $hitting things my first time around trying to pound the caps out! Once I started heating as diesel says above I had the dreaded nylon goop and grease popping and erupting from those caps like a good ole can of cheeze whiz!

I ended up cutting the U-joint cross with a zip cut disc, after that it was two whacks with the ball end of the hammer to get the cups moving...

I took the time to wire wheel the shafts and yoke area and spritz a bit of satin black on em. Hopefully I can snag the Spicer 5-760X's tomorrow sometime, then get these sluts back together again.

These wouldn't budge at all using the ball joint press...:dunno:

Had a three foot cheater on the ratchet tightening the BJ press...no go. I cut the cross out and it was pretty easy after that. With the cross out of the way you no longer are trying to get two caps moving at the same time.

That a great idea. Ill most likely have to get some nasty ones out at some point and that will come in handy.

I've used Dueling's method too,but resisted trying to explain how because its not easy too,he did a better job than I could have...it works good often, but the risk of missing with the hammer and denting the tube or bending the ears is always a possibility when both caps are rusted in good..............................................................................................................................................................................................................I use the torch to cut the cross when it feels like the ears will get damaged by trying to drive both cups out at once...sometimes even in a 100 ton press at work some stubborn ones refused to budge until I heated them, and they would go "POW" and you'd see the press come up off the floor about 2"...................one day while pressing one apart a cup shattered, and the next day I felt something poking me near my navel--a shard of it was sticking out of my belly,it went in a good 1/2" and never felt it till the next day when it felt itchy and I went to scratch it and it felt like a splinter...it was a peice of the cup where the snap ring goes..I just yanked it out with pliers, and was told later by a doctor I really should have gone to the ER and had a x ray to ensure nothing went deeper and to avoid infection...it hurt there for months afterwards!..

i have used a balljoint press for years works great, tighten with 7/8 wrench as much as i can . then big whack with a hammer on the hexacon head. et voila! tool is over 20 years old and must of change at least a joint a week, head comes like a mushroom over time.

I have used a balljoint press for doing double cardian joints, kinda give your that 3rd hand you need.
