So my work truck failed its first attempt at the DEQ last night. The test said my Hydorcarbons and carbonmonoxide levels were too high.

The truck- 82 3/4 ton with crate 350, 1406 edelpuke, stock exhaust manies.

I went home and pulled the cap (2yrs old) It showed normal wear, but not toast by any means. Pulled a plug or 2 and they could possible use replacing.

So I plan to do a generic tune up. Its been idling a little rough so maybe the plug wires too :dunno: I've had it for a little over 2 years now and its run so well i haven't messed with the plugs and wires.

Should I mess with the timing or idle mixtures? If so, in what way?

I had an Edelbrock carb on my dually and a couple other cars in the past, never could get them to run at an acceptable emission level, they always seemed to run rich causing those same high readings, even with good working Cats and crap...

I tried downsizing the jets several times, a few times to where it would pretty much just not run right, still no luck.

I'll stick with EFI... :D

fresh plugs and a couple cans of

I don't even know what's in it, but it works pretty amazing..... my #'s where cut in 1/2 after using that stuff...

I always had issues getting my old 350 to pass too. It had a 1406 on it, a 260HE cam, headers and no cats. It'd do fine on the loaded 'drive' test on the dyno, but would fail at idle. I took it to a shop i used to go to and he put it on the 4 gas analyzer...and sure enough at idle the numbers were not so good. He turned my idle up from 600 to 700 and the numbers got way better. I left there with my idle turned up to ~900 rpm, went to the test station and it passed with flying colors.

After that, every year for the E-test I'd turn my idle speed up to around 900 rpm and it'd pass easily.

just pay the dude a couple of benjamins and go on about your day. lol

I remember those days! LOL unfortunately it is very difficult to find those shops anymore. I remember in the early 90's (93 i think) when my big block powered 68 chevelle wouldnt pass smog and I did that very thing. When i went back to pick up my car a new 92 454ss was running my test. LOL guy just swapped vehicles. LOL

When I had my '87 K5 it failed too.

I got some of that same fuel treatment type stuff, put some premium in (don't know if I would now - with gas prices!) and ran it on the freeway for about 20 minutes before going into DEQ station. It passed with flying colors the second time.

YEAH it took me 4 months to find a suitable shop...

I agree replace the cat. When I failed because of hydrocarbons too high I get new cat and hydrocarbons come way,way down. Seems like my cats only last maybe 3 or 4 years till they need replacing. If everything else passes ok except for hydros too high Im almost 99 percent sure that will work. I've done this like 3 times now over bout 9 years. JMPE.

hydrocarbons is unburnt gas, the cat gets hot, burns off this fuel, if you can eliminate this problem of dumping too much fuel into the exhaust system, the new cat shouldn't matter....too much... it's also the reason for the high carbon dioxide, again, too much fuel burning.

Move here :D

best suggestion yet! :thumb:

they told my mine is not required to have cats. just need to pass the sniffer.

replaced my plugs tonight, and they needed it. new air filter as well. I will also turn up my idle when I go back- my idle is set pretty low. I didn't see that additive at the little napa I went to. Hopefully these things will do the trick.

also, someone said retard the timing... is this correct? I do have a good bit of advance if I remember right.

So do you have a cat? If the standards for passing are anything like the ones here, whether they require you to have a cat or not, you will never get the numbers low enough without a cat. Out of curiosity what is the passing standard?

I beleive they said with the GVW and year of my rig, i did not need cats. I do not have them as well.

My HC count was 377 and needs to be below 350

My CO was 9.6629 and it needs to be below 3
