ok guys i have a tire question. i have a set of 36/14.50/15 groundhawg 2 radials and needless to say there no where near balanced. took it to the shop and they told me they cant balance them. so i have read a lil bit and saw where ppl were using those balancing beads as well as airsoft beads. i was just trying to see if they worked and about how much i should use per tire to try and smooth things out a lil bit.

Go to the site for Dyna-beads and look at their charts. That will give you a rough idea and you can always add an ounce. Then go find a deal on air-soft pellets, as they are way cheaper than Equal or Dyna-beads. I did a whole set of tires once for $10. But you have to break down the tires to get the pellets in. So that is the advantage to the little ceramic beads. You can pull the valve core and put them in without dismounting the tires. But they cost a lot more per oz.

I have done bbs, dyna beads, equal, shotgun shot, and air soft.

I like dyna beads, they are heavier and smaller they seemed to work a bit better.

I would put equal a very close second, then shotgun shot next

Then bbs and then airsofts.

It seems they all work pretty alright

I ran airsoft pellets in the tires on my Jeep for two years of interstate driving and have them in the boggers on my K5 now. They run really smooth compared to my buddies TSLs with bbs at highway speeds.

My Dad just had his street tires done with airsoft pellets on his DD Cherokee too. I think the higher volume per weight helps ballance better than the heavier stuff, nit that is just my personal experience with dynamic balancing tires.

Have Dynabeads in three vehicles and have no complaints. http://www.innovativebalancing.com/index.php
2005 Ford F550 4x4 with 225/70/19.5 tires, which is run as a dually or single rears depending on my needs and the seasons. Dually set is Goodyear all terrains. Singled out set is Treadwright Crawlers https://treadwright.com/p-126-225-70r19-5-crawler-g-no-warranty.aspx See these tires are a discontinued item, maybe I need to order a set of four while they are still available!!! Am guessing they are running with the Mad Dogs instead, which would be a close second choice for my uses.
CUCV M1008 (Chevy K30 diesel pickup), with 315/70/17 Treadwright Mad Dog retread tires. https://treadwright.com/c-41-315-70r17.aspx

Almost all tire and font end shops in my area look down on balancing beads/media. Some even refuse to work on tires unless the balancing media is removed and weights used instead.
Have a couple of friends in the trucking industry who swear by Dyna beads, and wouldn't run anything else. They have a combined total of 30-35 long haul, and some short haul trucks on the road.

try a chevy or gmc dealer, if not a jeep dealer they might have the equipment to do it or a tire specific place like mavis discount or a local tire place.

had my tires balance at 4WP and had them add 1lb of airsoft BBs per tire at the same time

runs perfect
reason I did both, get the tires balanced, then with wear and chunking the BBs will take over.

thanks guys. i think im going to put 2000 of the .20 in each tire and leave the weights that on it already in place. seem ok or do yall thing it will be to much? also does it matter if there the bio degradable type?

Are you sure the weights that are in place are for those current tires? Meaning, did the shop put them on trying to balance the setup and failed? Or did they not even try because of some reason and the weights are old?

If you can break the bead and keep the tires in the same location on the rims, you can dump some BB in and give it a try. Can't hurt and doesn't cost much. If you can't break the bead, you can pull the valve stem core out and fashion up a funnel to pour the BBs in.

yea i tried to have them balanced but they told me they couldnt get them perfect being that on 2 of the tires i needed almost 16 oz of weight and they couldnt get enough stickon and clamp on weights to balance those two

Cause it makes those shops mad cause something as simple as beads do a better job :D Why pay for balancing, which usually sucks on big off road tires, or some shops can't do them anyway. Weights fall off, look crappy. Know of a lot of shops doing a horrible job like they don't know what they're doing at all. Know a guy who does tires for a living, and he's great at it. Guess what he has in his rig- beads. /rant

But for the beads, airsoft pellets are cheaper, but the dyna bead have the advantage (other than smaller, and easily pour down valve stems) that they last. Pay attention to the airsoft beads if you go that way, there are biodegradable ones, they'll turn to powder in time.

yeah, didn't look to see if mine are BIO ones. I'll have to check the extra in the bottle. Either way, I guess I'm not taking them out lol.

Also, about the stick on weights falling off. 4WP can suck it. I don't think they cleaned the damn wheels when they balanced the tires. I had 60% of the weights fall off.........my spare tire!! Just sitting there I guess, not enough centrifugal force to hold them on. :( Who knows how many I've lost on the others.

kool. i saw the bio degradable ones and almost bought them. then i was like nah i dont want a tire full of dust. so i got 2 5,000 dcout of the crosman presision .20 gram. i was just thinking i would put 2500 in each tire and it would be ok. any thoughts on that approach?

That's 500g or 17 1/2 oz. Per tire? What size tires? I think dyna has a calculator on their website for how many oz needed per tire. For example my 33x9.5xr15 should take around 6oz, when you get into 17oz a tire, you're in the 44s range.

One shop told me that they don't like beads because beads only effect th radial balance of a tire, but not the lateral balance.
That is true, but it doesn't necessarily mean you cannot use beads. The following links will explain when and when not to use beads.

I bought 3 bottles of 5,000 BBs. Split one for two tires (2500) and the last for my spare. I think it came to a pound per tire but I just went with it. I have 38x15.5x18 setup. Considering the tire/rim itself is well over 100lbs, it wont hurt anything. If you put in 5lbs of BBs, they aren't going to have room to spread out properly. I can't see 2500 BB having a problem. :waytogo:

I used airsoft beads in our old hoopty Suburban. It is a '99 with stock size tires. I used the calculator to determine the amount I needed, I put something like 10% extra. They definitely work, just not all the time. Every so often, you will take of from a start and one (or more I guess) of the tires would not balance properly and it is quiet rough. You need to slow down (I usually stop) and then go again and they balance fine. I have cheap Hankook tires on there. My wife has asked that any of her vehicles just have regular balancing in the future. I will use them when on my burb's 35s when it finally runs. Just my experience.
