Tire Opinions

The fronts are Laredo's and the rears are Delta Mud Tracs. Your probably right, this was actually the first time i didn't air down.
 
i run my 86 bronco at 10 psi and it has 33 12.50 r 15 maxxis big horns those tires are the best i have seen they rock in everthing.
the sub on 39.5 13 r 16 i run at 8 or 6 no bead locks if you run a narower rim you can air down acts like a bead lock hav not lost a bead yet knock on wood.

air down a 2x i piss people off all day long. In glamis i stop next to people on the hill leaving olds with big ass ford 250 burried up to the axles front and rear stop shake my head and pull away in 2x with 5 people inside.
 
So for a 13.50" tire, how wide a rim should i run. I currently have aluminum 15x10's which i was going to replace black steel 15x10's.

I like an 8" wide rim that width of tire for off-road use. It protects the lip of the wheel better from getting dinged up, helps keep mud/sticks/rocks out of the bead of the tire, and helps keep the tires seated at lower pressures. Several guys in our club, including myself, are running 8" rims with 15.5 wide tires with very good success.

Getting off topic some, but I just have to comment about the whole idea of only running 2wd or keeping the front axle unlocked. I completely disagree with these thoughts as I have personally seen more people break components doing these things (2wd or keeping the front unlocked if a selectrable locker) in an attempt to keep the front axle alive. You have to beat on the truck so much harder to get through an obstacle that you put a lot of stress on the other components. I can't count the number of times I have seen people break the front ends and while trying to get off the trail in 2wd they wind up breaking the rear driveshaft or rear axle, and I have also seen people with front selectable lockers keep them off to try to save the front end and wind up still breaking something in the front axle because of instead of crawling it they have to hit it a lot harder.

If you wait until you are stuck to put it in 4wd or lock the front locker, often times it's too late and your stuck because you have lost your momentum. And if you do get in a situation where you break the front axle because of the locker, than most likely you wouldn't be able to make it without it.
 
well i was mainly talking about in the mud, where he said he does most of his riding...the kinda mud we have in the south may differ a lil bit than what ya'll have up north...most people "play" in 2wd to see how far their truck will go, then put it in 4wd...I've done this on MANY occasions and MOST of the people i know with "built" 4x4's do the same...you can go LOTS of places with a rear locker that most people with an opened diff 4x4 cant...its just personal preference and if you're worried about breaking something, build it stronger...

not much need for 4wd here...i think it all depends on the terrain, vehicle & driver...i drove around for about 4 hrs n 2wd until i got stuck...in most of this stuff, it doesn't matter if its 2wd or 4wd cuz if a truck like this

gets stuck in what i was riding in, the point is irrelevant...that's what winches, snatch ropes and other vehicles are there for...just IMHO...
 
Yeah i tried to drive as much as possible in 2wd just cuz it's fun. Hell i put in the np208 so that i can switch on-the-fly. I don't have a heavy foot because i'm running 1/2 tons so i haven't broken anything yet. Its also probably the reason my tires get caked cuz i don't really ever like to rev the motor too high.

Now i might have upgraded axles in the truck now (haven't checked), because the original owner really spent big money on the rig. Supposedly it was built by Skyjacker for a TV show or magazine article.

Yeah, i've already stated more than once that i'm running 1/2 tons:

D44/4.88/OX Locker/Crossover and 12-Bolt/4.88/Detroit

So you see who ever built this thing spent a large chunk of money. So i wouldn't be surprised he he upgraded to cromoly axles. I just haven't pulled it apart to check.

Those are 38" TSLs in the pick and the previous owner never broke an axle.
