...or, "what's like a BFG Mud Terrain, but isn't a BFG Mud-Terrain?" since BFG may not make the MT's in the size I want (debating 37" vs 35", both on a 17" rim.) Don't wanna go total hardcore like the Krawler, but want more bite than an AT type tire.

Was looking at the Goodyear MT Kevlars, but after that Toyo thread, maybe I should look at the Open Country MT. Other brands, other thoughts? Don't care so much about cost, figure I don't buy tires often, may as well just do it once and be done.

Nitto Trail Grappler. I run them on my daily and they are great on and offroad. They dont break the bank either.

I am not happy with my M/T Baja Radials, horrible wear, did good in mud and sand tho, dont know about snow.

Nittos are great. Although just like the toyos there almost always back ordered here. I tried to get either one and the wait time was 6 weeks to 2 months.

I have heard really good things from people that run Pitbull Maddogs. Bias or radial is up to you but since you are concerned about wear and streetability my vote would go to radial. They are a mud terrain but they don't look anything like a BFG if that is a specific criteria of yours.

Just checked and the radial maddog is only offered in 38.5 and the bias maddog is 35 or 39.

They also have a bias growler in a 35

Wild Country MTX also comes in radial 35 or 37, don't know much about them but they look decent

Dick Cepek extreme country is what I'm leaning towards for my Blazer

I had Goodyear MTRKs in 35x12.50R17 on my 4 door JK and they were fine. I also had them in 37x12.50R17 on my Power Wagon and they were pretty much terrible. Great offroad traction but, they would never balance properly (shook the whole truck), one chunked down to the belts, and I ended up getting a full refund on the set of 5 due to how bad they were.

Nitto Trail Grapplers in 37x12.50R17- I have had them on my Power Wagon for about 19k miles or so and I LOVE them so far! They have chunked a little but, I wheel on rocks, quite often carrying enough of a load to be leaving them at street pressure (in a truck that weighs 7,000lbs empty) so, pretty much any tire is going to have a little bit of tread chunking. They are DEFINITELY holding up a LOT better than the MTRKs did and are quieter and much more pleasant on the street than the MTRKs were.

Toyo Open Country ?
I run the 37-13.5-18 MT on the suburban
Jason has the 35-12.5-18 MT on the jimmy

And I'm debating between the 295-70-17 RT and the 285-75-18 MT for the Dodge

I'm one guy who does not like the toyo mt. I drove a rig with em on. Was hunting for traction all the time.

I like the MTRs seems to be a good all around tire.

I like the Yokohama geolander mt. But they do wear faster. Seem to be a softer tread compound.

What kind of conditions were you looking for traction, and what shape were the toyos in?

I have seen alot of guys with toyos. That particular experience was in Moab. But I have many other examples where every other rig ( I realize this makes a difference too but we are talking everyone locked front and rear with good suspensions) didn't have issues and the toyo mts struggled. Mud, lava rock, hard dirt. They seem to work well in snow. Not ice but deep snow.

Tires are just like anything else though. Lots of different opinions.

I have been really happy with the toyo mt, but my main use is deep snow. I have used them on rocky/wet/muddy trails with zero complaints, but in certain snow conditions and mud they do take some wheel speed to keep cleaned out. They are also a pretty stiff tire, and work way better aired down. My current 40s on a 17 inch wheel dont start to look aired down till about 7 psi.

All my experiences have been with the 35 and 37" variety.

I have learned different sizes with the exact same tread pattern can perform way differently

Deep snow is the one place I have been impressed with toyos

I don't like Nittos or Toyos because they always seem to cheat you out of some tread depth.

I love the BFG MTs, just bought my 3rd set. Option 2 would be the Cooper SST, it's more of an aggressive AT than a real MT. The new STT Pro looks really good and you can really see the similarities w/ their ProComp cousins.

I have friends with nittos and toyos. They both do great. I see the toyos wearing a bit faster then the nittos for some reason.

Im still happy with my procomps (maxxis)!!
