Tire talk: More aggressive than an AT...

I have had great luck with all the new Mickey Thompson Tires. I am a big fan of the Mickey MTZ and ATZ. I'm still on my first set of MTZs on my K10 that were put on 10 years ago and have roughly 40k hard miles on them. I replaced a set of BFG A/Ts and it was a night and day difference. They literally work great on everything.
The ATZs I put on my '00 Tahoe and they were also a great tire. They were total beasts in the snow and were a bit quieter than the MTZs. The only thing I didn't like was that the mud traction wasn't quite as good as the MTZ but its not meant to be. I'd recommend the ATZs for any kind of combo street and trail rig that doesn't hit deep mud that often.
I am also currently running the STZs on my '12 1500. They are definitely a true all terrain. I don't have many miles on them but I can tell you that they are nice and quiet and weigh a lot less than ATZ or MTZ. Definitely fitting for a daily driver truck that is 98% street driven.

Dropped the Dodge off this afternoon. We'll see how the 285-75-17 look on it tomorrow. I chose the Toyo Open Country M/T after talking with my tire guy today. Even though the R/T offers a 45k mileage warranty, we think the M/T will be close enough to the same with the driving that the dodge sees. I'll be ok with a few thousand less highway miles for the benefit of my off highway traction. The deciding factor again for me on the brand and model was the support. Here in the Pacific Northwest Toyo is on every Les Schwab tire rack and can be replaced for me the same day. That puts me back on the road to the next tree slaying logger without worrying about the spare tire holding up on the rocks. All the other brands would probably hold up just fine, but I can't afford to be waiting for a tire or to mismatch just to get home. :burnout::crewcab::burb:

Anyone try the 37x13.5r17 STT Pros yet? I ordered a set of 15x12 steel wheels when I first started my build and was planning on running irok radials. Thinking about returning those and going to a 17x9 stt pro or keeping the 15x12 and getting the 15 the toyo. Tread looks alittle more open on the pro, so I'm leaning that way.

Ive sold a few sets, no complaints yet. They take a lot of weight to balance, though.

Well thats discouraging. Read several reviews raving about how little weight they took and some people even running them unbalanced. Most where on heep forums though...

I'll be honest, it was two sets and they were the same exact size.... could be something flukey there .

Mickey MTZs are great. When I DD'd my rig, I ran the 35" MTZs to work, school, hunting, log roads, off-roading; everything. They did it all. I sold them with around 20k miles on them and they still had a ton of tread left. I've run 3 sets of BFG ATs in my life, all pre-new design. They were a great tire for the first 50% of the tread life (which seems to go quick). Then they kinda suck. I can't speak for the new AT design though. Those are supposed to have better tread wear.

Now I run Pitbull Rocker Radials and I love them. They're a great tire for all around driving. I don't expect to see 50k miles out of them. But if you're looking for a 50k+ tire, you should look at Michelins. Lets face it, 50k miles on some Toyos or Nittos, or whatever, is going to leave you wanting to buy new tires again so that you have decent tread. I've run the Toyo Open Country AT2s, and wasn't impressed, for the money that they cost. They're noticeably heavier too.

My advice,... buy a tire that suits the needs of the rig 90% of the time, and then add a traction device in the rear axle.
