TIRES.... whats best. (quick gears question)

I would get the 4.56 and up carrier. I my mind that will allow the pinion gear to be larger dia. and at 5.13 you need all the pinion dia you can get

I thought the pinion stayed the same, and the thicker ring gear is how they cover the space between it and the flange....?

Actually it's probably all about tooth strength more than whole ring strength I guess :dunno:

your probably correct the carrier mounting is closer to the pinion, so it will be the same either way

I wish I could help on the gearing, I'm wondering the same.

the only issue with thick gears is you may find you can't get cross pin out of the carrier with out removing the ring gear.

Going with and ox or arb and a Detroit, there shouldn't be any need to mess with a center pin.
I don't think anyway :dunno: . So that should be ok.

Had anyone ever seen a ring gear snap through the whole ring? Or is it usually just teeth break off? I haven't wheeled hard enough to break gears yet.

never on a Light truck rear end , most failures i have seen are carriers and pinion gears

Well, I just caught up on this whole thread. I’ve been running the x-m/t’s in a 37 for ~2yrs, they are awesome on the trail and street. Mostly mud, old logging trails, and light rock around here. Balanced with “counteract” beads from Amazon. On method 105 beadlocks. I have put probably 3,000 miles on them with 15% trail, they still look new.

Past tires were tsl s/x’s (they were square but awesome off road) and bfg km2’s (felt like huge lack of lateral traction compared to s/x’s). These so far seem like a great balance between the two previous tires. Even better to see you got a deal on them, I should pay more attention then I’d be :hack:too lol

Think a stock open carrier with a Detroit in it will stand up to beefed big block and 40"s? Or should I do one of the ones that comes with the carrier and all?

We have a JY here that is all trucks only. They have a pretty decent selection or used carriers and such. I thought about just picking up a carrier from there and buying a Detroit to stick in it. They actually may even have a Detroit for it there.
I want to go selectable front pretty bad, but as is I could go to Yukon 5.13's for around $2.2k with a Spartan or something up front, and a used open carrier w/detroit for rear. Using the thick gear set.

Then later I could individually swap a carrier if I broke something or felt I needed too.
Otherwise it jumps to about $4k quick lol

I forgot that I have to change up my steering now too. Push pull and no hydraulic assist may be a little inadequate with 40s lol. That started making me think a cheaper route to get going is better than all out at once.

Stock Open Carrier is the same Carrier that a Detroit Locker goes in , that an thick gear set and you are done.

as for the front, since you are going selectable pick what you want

The "duck" aka the yellowk20 has 540, SM465 ORD Doubler, 5.13's and 44' TSL's rear axle has the original 4.56 Carrier and Detroit it came with . it has never even whimpered and I have done 6500 RPM clutch dumps on pavement . I have bounced it up rock water falls during the Chili Challenge as well and never broke the carrier or the G2 gears (4-wheel parts brand) I wouldn't even bother changing the Carrier gears if they look good, Just get you a Minor install get and go

I'll probably just do the thick gears, and a lunchbox of some kind in front, Detroit rear, for now then.

Only reason a want selectable front is because when my front WAS locked, my truck was fully and totally useless in 4x4.
Couldn't turn at all. I'm sure a lunchbox would probably allow me to. And getting rid of push pull. So selectable probably isn't necessary.

You’ll still find yourself unable to steer with a lunchbox locker without hydro assist. Crossover and hydro assist are a necessity if you plan on getting in the rocks.

Yeah that was the plan. If I skip selectable for now, I'll be able to get crossover and hydro assist. If I went selectable I'd only lock it when I absolutely had to, then unlock when I got past that spot that stopped me. Until I did the steering.
I'd rather do the steering now.

@shady I'm running general race tires (bias ply heavy) in 37" with crossover, psc box and hydraulic assist, no locker and it gets a workout. If you go to crossover and assist you'll wonder how you got by without it.

Definitely go with a selectable locker up front. All at once is a shock to the wallet but it all fades away to smiles the first run in the rocks.

A 14bff with a detroit will be fine behind your BBC. I’ve abused mine plenty and tend to use the throttle a lot. As Gus has done….hard throttle launches on dry pavement, and I haven’t broken anything other than a pinion straddle bearing. Just make sure you have a traction bar setup!
