I would like to put 40's on my 1982 K5 Blazer.
My thought was this:
1" body lift
6" lift
16/40-17LT E BSW Tires
Not decided on wheels yet

My wife is only 4'9", so I'm trying not to lift it to the clouds, but my thought is that this setup should work and not rub (haven't figured out the offset on the wheels yet)

Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?
This will be a once a week to two times a week driver and I definitely plan to put it in the mud!

Wheel width and offset makes all the difference in rubbing. That said, imo 7" and 40's will rub without trimming.

Off the top of my head - brake lines front and rear, lengthened driveshafts, pinion angle correction front and rear, steering correction, fender trimming, regear both pumpkins ... oh, and a step ladder for the little lady.
 
7" of lift with stock tires will be hard to get into
so if you want 40" i would do 4"lift and cut the heck out of the body
it will still have a decent ride and you won't have too bad of driveline angles
 
and 4" -up starts the possible need for c/v rear driveshaft .

why 40" tire ? ? ? I find 38" is a good all around size and dosnt brake the bank near as much as 40" tire.

also a load range E tire will be STIFF and ride HARD so if you don't need that and can get a lower load rating try that so you don't feel like your tires are full of rocks .

my buddy had a short bed with 4" lift ( stiff springs yucky ) and 3" body . he ran 38x12.50x15 tsl swampers. might have just kissed 1-2 times .

so if you did 6" and 1" body you could do same combo with min problems body wise .
 
The OP still hasn't clarified if he want's to cut or not, and if so, how much? That's going to dictate how much lift he'll need and all the work to make that lift work with the drivetrain.
 
YOU WILL HAVE TO TRIM THE FENDERS IF YOU GO WITH 40" TIRES AND 7" TOTAL LIFT. Any flex will cut those tires or crunch your fenders if you don't.

And as stated above you'll need a change in pinion angle, CV driveshaft for the rear and a longer drive shaft for the front, longer brake lines and some type of steering correction. Regearing the differentials to match the tires or you will notice a decline in the get-up-and-go aspect, possibly frying a transmission.

I have 6" lift with 37" tires in front as of right now and the fenders had to be trimmed or else.

As mentioned above you will need fender trimming to fit 40's with 7" of lift, but you should be able to fit them pretty good after some mild to moderate trimming. I ran 39.5x15 tires on only a 4" lift for years and it did require quite a bit of trimming but not what I would call extreme. Currently have 42x15 tires on the same 4" lift and trim and while I haven't been on a real trail with it I could not find any ditches around the house big enough to cause them to rub.
 
If you do a 6" spring up front plus a 1'' zero rate and move the axle forward 1.5"....you will have to trim a lot less. Doing the same in the back but instead of 6" springs, do a 2" spring/shackle flip/zero rate and move the axle back 1.5"

I ran 44's a few runs and didn't really have any clearance problems. My K5 was strictly a mud runner at that time though, so no real articulation.
 
Bringing this back alive... Does anyone have any pics of the amount of fender trim needed for 6-7" lift for 40s? I just ordered all my suspension, 7" total in back and ORD 6" springs in front. I originally just wanted to go with a 38 but all the tires I want to run only come in 37 or 40. I can't go down in size! ha
 
I can tell you that with too much offset on your wheels, 6" ORD springs 3" body lift and 44's will eat front fenders all the way to the floorboards when flexed hard. Even with the axle moved forward 4"+.


It's all about wheel offset and bumpstops. If they aren't right, they're so wrong.

Yeah I've read that and searched many many threads. Just none of them showed me exactly what I was looking for. I guess what I'm looking for is how much more cutting is involved with 40s vs 38s. Also, didnt realized how big difference offset plays into it. I'm a long ways off from doing it, just trying to get an idea. Thanks for the helpful reply though.
