Might be buying a 78/79 regular cab 4wd dually. Older crate 350, rebuilt 400 trans, 203, dually 60 front an narrow 14 bolt. Cab is pretty beat, but should be able to find a salvageable one, but truck has no title. Anybody parting out a truck with one and a vin plate? Doesn't matter what it is, 1/2, 3/4, 2wd or 4wd. Won't be using the truck as a 1 ton, so not worried bout ratings n what not.

Apparently this “illegal”, but happens all the time, just don’t tell cops or DMV. But if anyone close has cab with a title...

If the cab is beat and doesn't have a title the cab swap fixes your problem doesn't it?

The truck doesn't have a title which I knew about. It was an old fire truck, and usually they are pretty clean. Well, this one isn't. Prolly could fix the rockers, floors, and whatever else, but the roof is starting to rust where the A pillar meets the roof. So most likely moisture or water is running down the pillar to who knows where, and continuing to rust it out. So, before I knew how bad the rust was, was just looking for a title/vin. Now think it would be cheaper and easier (and legal) to get a cab with paperwork.

Could also look into a bonded title. It's not hard to do and doesn't cost much...

Could still do a bonded title for it if your state offers that. And I'm sure there almost HAD to be a title of some sort.

It takes a little more leg work on your part, and it's a little more money. (Cheaper and easier than a cab swap). But it should get you a title.

I can look into it. I couldn't see the vin plate, but almost looked there wasn't one there. It's been years since I've owned a 70s square, but I thought there was a cutout in the dash to see the vin, and this doesn't have it. I highly doubt they would put a new dash pad on this truck, but who knows the past 40 years. I've never heard of a bonded title, but I'll check.

When reading about it I thought it would be a huge pain in the azz... But then when I did it for my crewcab it was actually simple. Way easier than it sounded.

It has a 400/203, so Im thinking mid/late 70s, don't think that setup was used earlier. If snow melts I'll check it again.

If it is a later model with the vin on the dash, I have a vin and title from a 1991 crew cab.
I know you said that the cab is bad you need a better one, but if you don't...

Sorry, the 400/203 was earlier, 1974-76

it is possible. But I had a 3/4 ton years ago, was a 79, and had same combo. But who knows if it was original or swapped. This could be a 76, since it is a dually. I'll check it out again on the way to work. Now got me wondering lol.

It is only a felony to swap a VIN... but cab swap is legal.

Talked to a friend that is a state trooper. He said same thing. So in their eyes, if you swap cabs then need the title for THAT cab. But yet you can buy a cab from a junkyard. How does that work? Since this cab is pretty much toast, gonna look for a complete cab or truck that is being parted, with the title lol

1 ton 4x4 didn't start until 1977. It looks like it has the 2wd rear spring hangers which I think were only used in 77. Does it have factory rear blocks?

Matter of fact it does. Thought it was kinda weird, but since this was a brush/water tank truck, maybe they were used as a bump stops/overload.
