NY Title and VIN plate

I had a '77 with the 400/203 that came that way from the factory.

VIN was on the door opening (cab) by the striker plate, IIRC.

If you get a cab from a salvage yard it will have a salvage title.

The factory pop-rivets are a star shape that differs from ordinary pop-rivets.

If you remove the VIN tag from the cab, say to repaint, you can take it to the State Patrol and if it matches the VIN stamped in the frame they will pop-rivet the VIN tag back on with the correct rivet but I don't think this will work with what your doing since they won't match. Officers nearly never check the VIN on the frame but if they do they need to match or you'll have a lot of explaining to do.

Bonded title is the best way to go to avoid potential hassles down the road, IMO.

I've never heard of them checking frame VINs. They are lightly stamped and after a couple years surface rust all but erases them. I think I found a cab with paperwork, so might be good!! Now just need the money lol

I apologize but you're right that combo went to 77, maybe even 78.
I believe that grill is a 77, not sure if 78 had the same but the only thing that will make the cut is seing the dash.
Everything else just shows it's 79 or older.

yep 2wd rear hangers and 3" blocks and k30 = true 1977 unit .

if you swap stuff in the rear I want the blacks please .

and def vin in door jamb for vin tag like my 77k30 truck is .

I couldn't remember if they switched to 4wd hanger in 78 or not. I thought I remember parting out a few 78's that had the 4wd hangers. Maybe if was a mid year switch? You can probably get an idea of when it was manufactured if the tag is still on the 203. I bet it is a early 78 model probably assembled in late 77.

Saw that. Owner keeps saying came with a 454, but didn’t wanna tell him they didn’t come with one lol. And I’ve been looking for a 400 too....figures

Out of state vehicles will used to get the frame VIN checked by WA state patrol when transferring title from out of state. Now it is only required in a few cases like converting a truck to a pickup box trailer.

Called local guy that helped work on the truck and was part of the fire dept. said it is a 400, and tranny is rebuilt. Gonna find out tomorrow if it is indeed a 400. Look stuff over too now that some snow is gone....

you can get a title easy for it using Vermont if its not stolen and you are in fact the owner

Basically, they don't title vehicles older than 10 years. VT registration counts as legal proof of ownership. They also don't require you to be a resident to register a vehicle there.

Using those two facts. You apply for legal Vermont registration using a bill of sale and your vehicles non stolen vin number. They do a check to make sure it is in fact not stolen. Then they cash your check and mail you license plates and registration.

You take that registration that says you are the legal owner to your local dmv and tell them you would like to transfer it to your home state, they issue you a title and new registration and boom you now have a title. Obviously your home state registration rules apply here. so if they normally do an in person vin check, it is still required, and so on.

I have lost count of how many times I have done this over the years. The hardest part is knowing how much money to send to Vermont. You have to call them and give them the vehicles details so they can tell you the total fees.

bout how could I register it not living in VT? I'd love to get a title for it, would save me a lot of aggravation.

They do not require you to be a resident of Vermont to register it there. You just go online, fill out the paperwork with your info and address, print it out. Mail it all in with a check for the fees and a bill of sale. They mail you back the registration. You will have to call them to get the amount of fees owed so you can write the check.

that's is basicly title washing there .

make sure you check as lots of states now and making it harder to get one of these in to there state with all the washing going on with wrecked / rebuilt / totaled vehicles .

I know a guy who got a damaged car with a clean title . it was washed big time as it was orignaly totaled / sold for scrap only non rebuild status . he was ready to go to court and he gave the title washing place a offer they couldn't refuse . they took it and he made out like a bandit on the deal and never touched the car .

this is just a heads up so you don't waste money and time . make sure your state will recognize the out of state reg/title first .

I have a truck I need to do the paper work on for a title in ny now . its not bad few forms and some money and I can get one . its not as hard as some think it is .

I'm sure the DMV in Albany is closed today, they are any other day. I'll ask them what the process is. I think either way I have it covered with a new/different cab, but would be nice to have it tho.

It is basically title washing if you are washing a title...

If you do the research on the vehicle and make sure its all on the up like you should be doing with everything you buy. Vermont will be doing title research of their own. If there has already been a title issued for this thing in the last decade or so and its still on the books somewhere they will know and ask for it. They aren't in the business of doing anything illegal. Hell, they are the government, they never do anything illegal.

Vehicles I have done this on have not had titles issued to them. Some have never had titles, others don't even have VIN numbers, a few have just fallen off the books and it would take a day in court to get them back on.

What would NY do if you actually bought a vehicle in VT? Refuse you ownership and tell you to go screw yourself? Eh it is new york, maybe they would

Also its worth nothing that government vehicles never got titled until they were surplussed and sold to civilians. Some didn't even get titled then, if they were going to be used off the roads. This mostly goes for military vehicles but I have seen a lot of old fire trucks done this way.

Doubt DMV will be open till next year. But I will call n see what they have to say. Also checked the truck out again, its a 350, and had 4.56s. So, gonna be lifting it and running an OD. 3k rpm's at 60 sucks....
