TJ's tire thread

Yes 8 lug and if I went 15x8 I'd have to shave the calipers. 35's should suffice on the 17' wheels I have now

Cooper evolutions are $283 a tire cheapest of that size range.

The general grabber looks good as well but $393 a tire.

Not sure why the Coopers are so much cheaper than all the rest

I would go with the Generals over those generic looking Cooper's. I owned a set of the X3's in the 35x12.50x15 flavor and they were good.

Copper price is hard to beat for MT tire.
Long thread but it's easier than having g a ton of windows open on my phone.
I like the grabbers but their tread is similar to Coopers and I can save about $500 total going with the Coopers, plus discount is having 4th sale and Coopers are an extra $120 off

It’ll take less time to grind the calipers than to write all the comments in this thread!

Bro,,, I know it's a ridiculously long thread. But I jumped the gun on the first set I bought, so I want to make sure I make a less rash decision.

But it's kind of my MO to have long threads with a million questions. hell, a mod even put in my profile.

As I ponder my next question.

For me the journey is the fun
I know guys who finally get everything perfect, then have nothing to work on next, get bored, sell it and get a new project.
Everyone's different of course

I understand your pain; I argue with myself all the time about stuff

If I’m reading this right, you can fit 15” wheels on 8 lug axles with some caliper grinding? If that’s the case I’m gonna have some 17x9 steelies and brand new 37” BFG’s for sale. I love small wheels and big tires.

Every time I think "that's it I've got it"
Today I'm looking at 37's because what if 35's leave too much daylight in the wheel wells. In reality it would probably be 1.5" at most in difference..

The grinding on 3/4 ton is minimal while D60 is substantial.. my hesitation is I can't find a video or pictures of someone doing this. I hope the 15x8 would fit the rear drums as well. Or find a 15x8 with 2' back space, then no grinding

I used a set of Cooper tires years ago on the wife's SUV and they did great, even in wet snow.

And with enough offset, you can put 15"s on D60 with no grinding, so a D44 shouldn't be an issue.

I've done grinding on the 10 bolt and it isn't that bad. Try to do it when you get the rims and before the tires get mounted. That way it's easy lifting. It's really more like "clearancing". Grind a little, test fit, grind some more. I wish I had some photos, but that axle is long gone.

Also, I can appreciate the decision making process. It sucks doing things over, although that's the name of the game sometimes.

And, I'm glad I'm not the only one who still likes 15's!!! They just look so right on a K5.IMG_20220529_152215973.jpg

On another forum they say the grinding is basically smoothing it out. depending on the backspace will determine how much.
The 15x8 only come in 4' BS as the smallest
