TnA's 86 Jimmy Shop Build / Product Development Thread - (Trailing Arms?!?!)

Sorry, Im a sand slut, I forget about those rock things :haha:

A thick skid would be pretty sweet compared to the thin factory one. Incorporate it into the frame using tube and plate and make a skid/crossmember that would stiffen that area where the rear shackles mount..

My frame is twisted there :doah:

Maybe it will look better once I get the "shell" designed, I dunno. I'll keep at it for now. Thoughts??

Can't look any worse than some of the old step looking bumpers :dunno:

I say plate it and see how it looks... Maybe put the plate or tube back a bit and keep the center cradle portion sticking out a bit :dunno:

It does stick out pretty far, but I understand it's not really avoidable.

I agree with Adam; have the center section sticking out the farthest and angle the sides back toward the ends of the fenders.

Can you not pull it back a little but. Looking at my cradle now. Could you not split the difference in half between the cradle location and that location. I agree. That will look rediculous. Be the jay Leno bumper.

What am I still doing at the shop??!!?? Oh yeah, CAD........

Well, I'm happier with it now that it's covered, lol. It doesn't look quite so out-of-proportion, and I think it will look good against the square body lines of the truck. I'm planning on making some sides that will bolt on, so we can make a set that covers the factory fenders, and another set that I can't wait to get designed, but that will have to wait for now - I'll tell you guys more about that when the time comes... ;)

What does everyone think now??

I have an idea, and please bear with while I explain it.

On the original underbelly mount, I understand the wing concept and like it. And totally see where you are headed with part two in order to get that full bumper look while still making both able to be customized to the end users needs. So my idea is (I am always better at these half a$$ed plans when I am on site) can you fab a full bumper that attaches to the original design that bridges over where the fairlead is. Think upside down step bumper but cooler. You may need to craft it in a three piece design as in skid part, bumper part and a two part bolt on bracket that conects the two. Nice part is thrash the bumper and order a new one but keep the center section and winch in place.

I don't smoke dope, but if I am high let me know. But if it works I want a measly 3% of all sales. Hehehe.:haha:

Idk, prolly wouldn't stick out much more than this. And it's not a horrid looking bumper IMO

I wish you made a mount that allowed us to keep the stock bumper.

That would be a good seller

I'm pretty sure you could do it off the winch cradle. I think the factory bumper bolts could be made to work over it

I think I can answer all these posts together... If you look back in the old Twizted winch cradle thread, k5fd89 posted up that he fit a stock bumper over the winch cradle fairly easily (http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254093&highlight=twizted&page=7).
You might want to message him to see if he has any more info on how he did it. I would think that this would be a good idea if you are looking for a "cover" that could be bashed and then replaced. I'm sure an aftermarket replacement bumper would be much cheaper to replace than something hand-fabricated :)

Here is a pic he posted of his setup:

If I pull it back any further, then you would be confined to a non-integrated style winch again, and that was one of the things I was hoping to avoid. I think that being able to bolt up something like the Warn Powerplant on your tow rig or mild trail rig would be cool. The hardcore guys should be running an engine driven compressor, and then the winch cradle to go along with it. I really don't want to make three different styles of center section, lol. If there is a market out there though, you never know...
I'm going to keep going this direction for the moment, and hopefully it doesn't look too Leno-ish (nice analogy by the way! Lol) in the end.

True, I don't think it sticks out much more than that. I think that since the mount is so thin, it made it look like it was just hanging out in the middle of nowhere. It really looked crazy without the winch on it, and the winch alone made quite a difference. I hope to get a decent idea of the final look in CAD first, so I can make a judgement on whether or not to go cut some more steel... I might even go so far as to render it, then photoshop it on the front of the K5 first to check proportions.

I would do that. Alot cheaper than wasting money in steel if you end up not liking it. I think you need a full cad rendering of a k5 to use for mock ups on the computer...... I know I guy that could do that...:haha:

Lol, well in a year when you get it done, let me know!!

roger that. forgot bout that part.

Well here is a really crappy but quick rendering of the bumper center section on the truck....

Onward we go....

Yeah, I like!!! What y'all think now that the design is more complete?
