To all you BIG hp/tq guys running manuals...

hmm, nothing on the pilot bushing. Could contact them for the info I suppose. If anyone finds it let me know /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I may have jumped the gun on the pilot bushing. Call them directly and talk to Al. I believe they are going to be releasing one soon but for now, if memory serves you have to machine out the tail of the crank or something like that. It's doable I just haven't gotten far enough into it yet.

As far as the research I did I just surfed the net for a week straight reading what I could and then talked to some knowledgable peeps like Al and some others and that's where the 10 spline adapter sleeve came up.

Are you guys talking about starting out in 3rd in 4lo? the tcase in a yota is going to be a lot lower than a 205 correct?

[/ QUOTE ]

Probably not, but the tires are probably smaller (his were)and the truck weighs half as much.

I've jammed mine in 3rd in the mud, and it's a waste of time. Even in 4 low, it's too high.

I run a 454 with around 450 HP and 475 torque. I love my 465. It gets old alot since lately its my DD, but there isnt anything else I'd rather have due to reliability, simplicity, and the granny. I dont worry about revving out in the mud because I have enough power to turn a higher gear than most, so if it starts revving to high i just ease of the gas because i know my tires are still spinning at a pretty decent speed. I havent done any rocks with it, but have crawled up some washouts and such. It can get jerky since your in such a low gear with alot of power, a hand throttle could cure this nicely, since you wont be stepping on it. I'd say if its what you want, go for it! Not many people on here will tell you its a bad combo, so it's a matter of preference now.

bigblock44k5, are you going to Jones' Swamp for the New Years ride?

Thank you! Thats what I wanted to hear /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

By the way what gears are you running?

Also what clutches have you boys been running? I need to know whats gonna stand up to 500hp. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I run a 465 4spd in just about everything I have.

As far as mud goes, I've always ran 4-high and 2nd gear (listed as 1 on the shifter knob). When a previous owner used to run the Big Crew Cab out at the mud races with Nitrous on a 396, he'd run 4-low and 3rd gear turning lower tread 39.5" Boggers with 4.10 gears.

He also went through quite a few clutches. I saw one flywheel that came out of it once, with a huge circular indent into the face of the flywheel where the disc would contact.

Here's a clutch out of it that was in the truck when the nitrous wasn't used.

I have also had the following problems with the SM465s: 3rd gear synchros/as well as 2nd and 4th gear, shifter linkage jamming in 3rd gear position, and worn splines on 10-spline output shafts (loud clunking noises). I still like them better than automatics though for what I do. Power is more direct, and theres no slippage (except the clutch).

You can gear down in low and crawl. But shifting in mud is out of the question if its thick stuff. I still want to build a more competitive mud "race" truck, and it will be an automatic. But overall for everything else I do and drive, I'd rather run a 4spd.

One tranny line breaks and you lose fluid in an automatic, and your stopped. Crack open or somehow lose gear lube from a 465, and you can still make it home.

And as far as high horsepower, you'll notice the same SM465 is used from 250-6 cylinder trucks to 454 trucks from the factory. Theres really nothing you have to do to "beef up" a 4spd like you'd have to do to an auto.

I have run BBC's in a 1983 K-3500 Dually w/38 Swamper TSL's and it was GREAT ! Starting out in third and low was just fine but did require some seriuos throttle to keep the motor happy when there was a lot of traction.
I found that letting the motor idle at crawling speeds made for some horrible jump and bucking ( due to the 10 spline coupling between the 465/205 ) but if I held a slight bit of throttle steady it was no problem.
As far as clutches go I found the McLoed Dual Disc Borg&Beck style to work fantastic - very little pedal effort but it gripped very well . I also have had great outcome from a ceramic disc clutch along with a stout pressure plate - pressing the pedal was as hard as can be and will make your leg ache in places you did not know you had but it held up the best that I have ever seen !
The ceramic disc would perform just as good wet or dry . Down here in Florida we have serious swamp runs and it is normal to have a load of silt and grime in your bellhousing because the water is usually spark plug deep . Shifting gears while the clutch is submerged will kill normal clutch disc's ( if the motor can dish out enough torque ) .

i've been running this setup for a while now, and all I can say is WOW!!! your gonna love all that low end! you'll love being able to dust almost any car that wants to race ya light to light! and the 3rd gear start is a must when realy gittin it!

I got mine all pulled apart now , I'm going for .060 over and 10 to 1 pistons, plus resealing all the gearboxes. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

ps; I had my crank machined and had a custom made pilot bushing made, it's really big outside diameter, and just hammers in, like a regular bushing!

Im running a brute force right now. If I felt like doing it again I would use something with a little more holding pressure. It holds everything i can dish out with the clutch engaged, but if im goosing it while releasing the clutch it slips a little before fully engaging.
I run 3.73s, saving up for "rocks".

Dont know if im going to make it to the swamp yet, Im seperating from the military soon and am going to need money to move and a good working truck! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I run a 489 bbc (bored and stroked 454), SM465, NP205, 1 ton axles with 4.10 gears and 38" TSL's. I don't know actual HP and torque numbers, but its definitely in the range you're asking about. This thing makes gobs of low end torque, pulls like a tractor! There's no need to even rev this thing over 4000 rpm (except to hear how sweet!). I like this engine coupled to the SM465, although it can't be shifted extremely fast, I don't see this as a problem. I don't have any problem starting out in 3rd gear (but why would you want to). This truck has seen more trails/rocks than actual mud, but seems to do fine in each. So far, the 10-spline coupling between tranny and transfer case hasn't been an issue, but when I install a doubler, I will be upgrading that area to a 32 spline. As far as bouncing or jerking, sometimes I get a little of that, but that might be lack of experience. I would like to put a hand throttle on it, that might help in some cases.

Big torque/horse engines and 4 speeds forever! Of course, that NV4500 5 speed sounds sweet too!

Awesome responses guys /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif I'm getting all giddy like a little school girl just thinking about it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

where did you have your pilot bushing made? /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I am getting a little giddy also. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif I am about to do this exact same swap and the start of this post was looking grime.

Yeah I hear ya on the start of the thread. Now I've been getting the responses I was hoping for /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
