My uncle has a 80's model full size chevy van. It has 74,000 miles on it. He wants 500 for the van.....I know I can buy the van and at the very least make my money back. Scrap or part it out.

This van is so clean I hate to scrap it, but there isn't really a huge market for full size vans like this around here.

I know the mileage is accurate, its been dealer serviced every 3,000 - 3500 miles.

So this may be a stupid question, but should I buy it?

I've always wanted to be a kidnapper. But being a ninja pretty well takes up all my free time.

My engine is starting to use more oil, and smoke heavier on start up. I figure this will could be a good engine to put in my truck. If i work it right, it could essentially be free.

i got a 350 tbi / 700r4 / 4 high back captions bucket seats / power mirrors / few other parts and also 175 in scrap from a $400 van 1 time a year or so ago. and scrap has gone up since then.

hate to scrap a vehicle that clean. but what do ya do ?

also the van had full serp belt system on the 350 motor. and van's = remote resivor and hydro boost pump style power steering.

and thay have nice big 40 gal fuel tanks. make for good offroad fuel tank on built up project for the fill it 1 time for all week end fun.

Heck,I'm having a hard time convincing myself t partwith my 81 G-10 ,that I bought in 1990,for 500 bucks--and its been sitting in my driveway 7 years unregistered!...and rust is taking its toll on it,itll need a main leaf in one rear spring, and undoubtedly a bunch of brake & exhaust work should I ever put it back on the road--right now its being used as a storage shed for things like tires,my moms caravan rear seats I took out so I can haul more with it,etc...be lucky to get 200 bucks if I sell it (if anyone would even LOOK at it)--its worth 500 in scrap probably, since scrap is 230 bucks per ton here now again...

If I had a chance to buy another one like it in the same condition mine was in back in 1990 (like NEW body wise, straight six camelhumper 250 engine though!)--I would grab it...I drove mine to Nashville,NY,NH,VT & Maine many times and I loved camping out in it...the fact I might not have a place to live after my mom passes is mostly why I still have it,really...but ,I probably should let it go before prices drop--going to be hard to see it go after 21 years though, and I HATE junking a "useable" vehicle--if it had a blown motor,or tranny,or really "junk" I wouldn't feel so bad about scrapping it...

I'd buy it if I were you, even if you end up scrapping it you'll break even at least...what pisses me off is you can buy 500 dollar vehicles in decent shape sometimes, but getting them registered & insured costs twice that...thats why I have two sitting in my yard without plates..
