To cut or not to cut, that is the question.

okay, i know that i dont know much in the ways of well, just about anything. but i have one hell of a crazy imagination. but what if you were to frab some sort of support so that you could slide the hacked portion back, like a huge sun roof? it would be detachable as it is part of the convert top, but seals as if it were attached to the truck. i know this would be one hell of a time consuming and mind killing feat, by hell, i think it would be cool. why do you only use your 4wd for parking lot maneuvers?

I agree

Well, weather I cut it or not, it will not always be pretty, I'm not building this thing to win a show N shine. I've always wanted a "pretty" 72 for the street so the UAV wil be the off-road only machine at some point. It comes down to more of a function kind of thing I guess, full vert is cool, but I have been on the trail in Moab in 120 degree sun and on the trail in Colorado when raining and I like the top then even with the rear off your pretty much out of the elements. I won't have to decide until I get another daily driver though.

On my 74 I plan on using a bikini top hooked to the windsheild frame and attaching to the 'planned' rollcage for inclement weather. Best of both worlds...no steel to mangle on the bad off camber sections, but you can still keep the rain or sun off your head. If it's a bit cooler and dry just roll up the bikini top and chuck it in the back somewhere. For winter I'll be retaining the full hardtop.

BTW does Canback make a top for a full convertable Blazer (73-75)?

If you are thinking of going full convertable there is no need to make it ugly. Find a 73-75 windshield frame and graft it on, then you have the option of running a weather proof hard top if you want.

no..no canback full soft top yet. I'll prolly go with Specialty top co (I think that's their name......used to be Kayline).

After much thought, I say keep it - or look into getting something on the order of the sport truck guys' removable cab done to it.

I wish I took pics of the big Bronco I saw in Moab last year (don't even start) he had a giant sun roof cut out of the cab with no doors or tailgate with custom roll-cage and tube doors, it was hella cool, he had a tire carrier that when it was closed the tire fit into a notched part of the body between the frame rails, when open you could get to the toolbox that was built into the cage, had a place for the cooler as well, one of the best designed cages I have ever seen, why I didn't snap some pics is beyond me. I may do something similar not sure yet.

I say a convertable would be wicked... but then I love the sound of that bronco. Maybe go the sunroof route. I personally like the top most of the time, but a sunroof that the glass popped up and out of would be even better! If you go the convert route I agree get a full convertable top and the windshield and do it right. Then you could put the hard top on for winter.

I would say leave it alone till it becomes an offroad non daily driver. A full convert is

though. There is one in a junkyard near me that I look at everytime I am there and one of these days I am going to ask them for the price and either rebuild it or use the parts to make mine a full convert.

Ok StevO lemy tell you having a full vert on the trail for visablity is awsome! I HATE my hard top and will probly never put it back on! I use the kayline soft top and in the hot sunny days I just roll up all the windows and go safari style

to keep the sun off.
My soft top keeps the water out better than my hard top did(hardtop is kinda warped and all the seals are original).
Full convertable trail rig is the only way to go! Hell its just sheet metal, you have already crossed the line from stock to trail rig and if you chop the top (remember MoneyPit?) then yrs down the road you don't want it that way anymore I'm sure you can find a donor K5 to get it back to square one and start all over again!!
