To everyone who cut out their fenders...

Just an FYI , you should check out Y Units ,even though there is no pretty lip or rolls i think they look badass. I think he may have stencils he sells to copy this design as well. Best i have seen in my opinion if you care how they look.

The thing with welding in extra metal and closing stuff up is that if it traps water it will rust fast as hell.
...

yea that the only thing about closing it up with metal that will be a problem is the traping of water/mud. I forgot to mention I WILL be drilling drain holes too. I just wanted some rigidity back in the fender. my home built bumper will protect the side pretty well but if I smash the fender I will just trim more off.

Do you know if the inner fender is effected at all? How do I go about contacting him about possible stencils? Although from the pics and measurments I'm sure I could get the cut pretty darn close. Do you know what he does about the double wall parts of the fender?

Dude....I'm telling you that anything over an inch or two all the way around IS going to effect the inner fender. Alot. That thing bolts to the outer fender. Stick your head in over the tire, you'll see. Best bet is to chop it and weld them together. Best thing to do for rigidity is to get some solid round stock and run it along the edge of your cut and weld it in. Mine are so stought that I think I can probably jack my truck up on them. Haven't tried, but they have taken some nasty hits, and nothing seems to hurt them. Inner fenders aren't that big of a deal. I'm getting ready to taper my front end, and I am working on some "walls" inside the fender to act as a splash gaurd. When I get them going more, I'll get some pics for ya.

how do you keep the fender from flopping around if you use that Yunit design? I mean you would think it would be pretty floppy....

Well, if I was to cut my fender like the picture I have attached, it wouldn't effect my inner fender at all. I figure why do I need to cut the top out? I'm never gonna get my tire that high, it ain't gonna flex like that. As long as I can cut it to make clearence not an issue and look good, I'll be happy. Shouldn't be too hard.

Here are a few pics of mine. I cut back to the inner fender, and under the rad support. I still rub but just on my inners so no biggie:wink1:

It looks like what you did is EXACTLY what I want to do....I wanted to cut the back of the rear fender up and the front of the front fender up like you did and cut out the rocker and put in that long piece of steel that goes front fender to fender.

If you could, I'd love some more detailed pics of this, also some pics and specs. of how that square tubing is attached. Glad to see someone has done just what I had in mind.

I can get some pics for ya tomorrow closer up. The slider under the rear corner just runs off of the bumper. The sliders under my rockers are bolt on. I do plan on cutting the rockers out eventually, but for now they are just bolt on. I bought the sliders from BlazenOffRoad (81JimmySLT) he is a vendor on here. Just 2x3x.180 rectangle tube with some 2x2x1/4 angle iron that bolts to the body ribs.

I can jack up the entire side of the truck with these, and have hammered them pretty hard with no problems. Pretty simple, cut out the existing rockers and weld in some box tube.

I did not stiffen anything up on mine, but do still (barely) have my inners up front. Stuff rubs my fenders and they just flex inwards and don't dent. Make em nice and rigid and they'll dent easier IME. As long as whatever I might rub doesn't get the body line it doesn't dent and it also doesn't trap mud, water, salt or crud.
