I was wondering what kind of special tools i should try to get that are needed for these trucks. More specifically the 87-91 tbi suburbans. Stuff like axle sockets or large sockets and wrenches for suspension or stuff for the engine.

Your definatly gonna want a spindle nut socket, i have 2, one for the garage and one for the trail, i still gotta get 2 more for my dana 60.

A c-frame ball joint/u joint press kit is pretty handy to keep around

The power steering hose fittings on my '88 are an 18mm at the steering box which is a bitch since most flare nut or end wrench kits don't come with that size

My buddy brought one of these radiator funnels over once and I'm sold on it for doing coolant flushes and fills.

Seriously though, a 9/16" and a 1/2" will get you through about 85% of these trucks. And a 3lb sledge with a little short handle can be really handy, really just for tapping more than wailing. I think my brake creeper is my favorite thing...man without it my knees just kill me.

Even if you get in to tranny work, it's mostly basic tools. What you can't buy at any hardware store you can usually make yourself pretty easily.

I wise mechanic once told me something about chevys..........if you cant fix it with a hammer you must have an electrical problem.

looks like i need to buy some tools lol. I have the power steering pulley tool and radiator funnel already. What about engine diagnostic tools...timing light, fuel pressure gauge stuff like that?

Like was already said, axle nut socket(s), spanner socket for ball joint preload, timing light, a GOOD DVOM, vacuum gauge, fuel pressure test kit, 18mm wrench for P/S hoses at steering box, flare nut wrenches (both SAE and metric).

I got the dvom and vacuum hand pump tool already till work on the rest of the stuff when I get my tool bill down haha. Never heard of adjusting ball joint preload though.

What does it do is it for like camber adjustment or am I way off?

It it used to adjust ball joint preload via the adjuster sleeve on the upper ball joint. If you've ever had the knuckles off of a solid axle truck with ball joints you will see a threaded sleeve in the upper C of the axle housing and the socket is used to turn that sleeve.

Suppose I'd have to wait till I see one lol. How many different hub sockets are there for chevys? I would assume 3 10b/44 60 and 14b?

Hub sockets there is one for the D44/10 bolt, one for a D60, one for a 14FF and depending on which style of nuts are on the 14ff could be the same socket as a D60.
