If you're going to ditch the hard top permanently then yes, it's nice to lose the weight and window rattle.
Does the year matter on the tailgate? Or will any 73-87 tailgate work for a '78 blazer

I am putting mine on the inside of the windows where ever there is chafing. Got my patches ordered and will be doing snaps on the rear as well. No more $1200 mistakes!
For me, the benifit of the soft top out weights the cons.
1. 300 pound weight reduction is huge if you add a pick up truck tailgate.
2. Convince and comfortability. It is nice to roll it up when it is hot outside.
3. Coolness factor! Turns a lot of heads!
Keeping the hard top for winter is what I should have done.
@2INSANE where did you get your patches from? I still havent gotten around to installing my soft top, so i can still prevent any chaffing
No doubt the soft top is the way to go. I use to take my top off and use a 20x25 tarp over the whole truck if it was going to rain. Soft top is much more practical and isnt as offensive to my neighbors lol

You will also need to get the tailgate trunions and latches as well to make it work.
They all fit, just depends on what style lettering you like. The earlier ones are across the whole gate, while the later years are in the corner. There is a year split with the hardware, a big and small trunion set.

They were on it when I bought it. Haven't really looked at hoe they're mounted
4-6” should be enough. I’ll post pics after I reinforce my windows.
